No problem, Wanderingsoul. This is a great forum. I found that there are people from all different levels of experience here, not to mention people from a very broad and diverse array of styles, TMA and otherwise. Hell, on top of THAT, there are people here from many different cultural backgrounds. You will find that this is a good group of guys and gals to exchange information with. As far as people trolling or flaming, (2 words I had no idea what the hell they meant about a year back), they get handled rather quickly. The moderators are good about nipping some discussions in the bud if they get to be nothing but attacks on other members. Like I stated, I have some really good friends who have studied Shaolin-Do, one of which still does. They are excellent martial artists, I dont take anything away from them. If you do happen to take issue with posts, please address them in a calm manner and explain your position on the issue, (this goes beyond just Shaolin-Do threads). The cooler heads generally prevail both here and in the real world. As I said, bullies and trolls are handled pretty quickly, people who are here for what the DL is intended for: comraderie (sp?) and discussion, are welcomed and defended against such attacks. I look forward to shooting the breeze with you. Have a good evening.

Rep Power: 150 | | Well if he's charging you those fees they're not hidden anymore, right?
Right?
All businesses charge extra for seminars. They're extra, that's why they're extra. Though only teaching required forms through seminars is a little dodgy.
However -- to continue as a devil's advocate -- sometimes seminars are the only way to make sure that required material is learned correctly, or at all. Like any business with numerous branches/affiliates/franchises, some teachers don't have all the materials their students require to qualify (there are a number of reasons as to why they don't, some valid, others unacceptable).
It's really easy for a misinterpreted memo about, let's say, a forms seminar being held for orange-belt students in the Wyoming branch, because their teacher's ill, being interpreted as everybody in the entire system has to do a seminar to learn the form.

Rep Power: 47 | | | The thing is that the form is required for higher advancement and only taught at his seminar for a price. They don't tell you this when you sign up in the beggining. He may only teach a seminar on that particular form once every 2 or 3 years so you had better learn it then or you may have to wait a long time before he teaches it again. Sin The' changes forms every seminar. I wouldn't have a problem with this if he were to tell you in the beggining when you first join.

Rep Power: 0 | | | First, Jade Dragon is correct the forms he teaches at the seminars are required for Higher Black belt advancement. The one he is teaching this month is required for advancement from 3rd to 4th degree Black. However since must train for a minimum of 12 years before you can test for 4th degree you have many chances to learn it before test time even if it is only taught ever 2 or 3 years.
1. There are NO extra seminar requirments between white and 2nd black.
2. Some schools require you to purchase the patches if you want to wear them, however they are not required to be worn.
3. And yes we wear GIs everyone please get over it |

Rep Power: 47 | | | so if you are a green belt or brown belt you would have to take the seminar because it might not be taught for a very long time even though it's not required until 2nd black?

Rep Power: 0 | | | If you wanted to learn it directly from Sin then Yes but if your instructor learns it and has been tested on it you can learn it from him/her. However like I said it takes 6.5 years to get from brown to 3rd Black so you have plenty of time. Additionally, only about 1-2% of people who begin Shaolin-Do ever make it past 3rd or 4th Degree Black. So you are only talking about a few people who NEED the material and a bunch who just want to learn the material for personal knowledge. |

Rep Power: 39 | | | It only takes 6.5 years to go from brown to black? That's pretty quick. Though my last style before CLF was extreme to say the least so that could be coloring my opinion. How many forms does master Sin The claim to know? Some accounts have it as a extraordinary amount. |

Rep Power: 39 | | | And I can understand that. I dont have a problem with any practitioners of your style just some of the claims made about your master.....I just find it hard to believe. But everyone has the right to do what makes them happy. Just realize this was one of the very few style bashing threads on this forum so be prepared. |

Rep Power: 0 | | | I will give you that some of the stories told by Sin are hard to believe, but that doesn't mean they cant teach a lesson. I personally don't believe that Abe Lincoln walked 6 miles to return a penny which he had short-changed a lady, but I still think that I am a good americian and I will tell it to my son as an example or honesty. If the stories of his achievements inspire someone, more power to them. |

Rep Power: 39 | | | Embelishing is one thing but there is a point where it gets ridiculous. And remember the Abe Lincoln story has been retold so many times Im not sre it was he that made the actual claim to be 6 miles. |
