Wanted: Info on Shaolin Do Karate

There isn't much you can do seeing that GM Sin controls just about everything that goes on in SD. You can however from what I understand set your own guidelines as far as uniforms go but then you can't be a member of the Shaolin Do Association. If you do anything that varies from GM Sin then you can't be a member and you can not go to any of the seminars etc..... Some things you might be able to do is not charge for every little thing like GM Sin does. He CHARGES and REQUIRES the purchase of patches for your uniform. Don't make it obvious that your main goal is to make money even though it may be one of your goals since it is a business just like anything else.

Do I have to go to all those silly Sin The' seminars that are REQUIRED for like Brown belt and above? And buy all those stupid patches that are REQIURED for my traditional kung fu gi?

That was just for your white belt, afterwards you must go monthly to my seminars ( each at $995.95) to advance from White 137th stripe to full White Belt, then Yellow 137 to Full Yellow to Yellow/Green Stripe 137 to full Yellow Green Stripe to Yellow/Green Stripe with Blue Trim 137 to full Yellow/Green Stripe with Blue Trim to Green, to Puce, to Purple, to Puce x2, to Orange, to Red to Puce x3 to Brown 1,999 to Full Brown, to Almost Black Belt But Not Quite There Yet to So Close To Black Belt It Hurts My Guts to I Just Mortgaged My House And Sold Both My Kidneys And Took A Down Payment On My Heart To Reach Full Black Belt.....

The problem is is that as long as you call yourself Shaolin-Do people will still have the same preconceptions. A few things you could do is name your school something different (with your Masters ok). For instance, My school is called Dragon and Tiger Kung Fu. We dont hind what style but the name isn't the typical Chan Family Choy Lee Fut either. So I'm not telling you to hide your art but to not just name it Shaolin Do. DON'T HIDE YOUR STYLE YOU TEACH but it might get a few respectable Martial Artists to try it. Make sure the style is on the front window and under the Name of the school.

Second you could go to other schools and lear what forms and techniques your style teaches. Such as Ive heard that at some point you learn yang style tai chi. So go to a yang style tai chi school and learn it there way. Im not saying change your shaolin do may of doing things if there are differences but you can see what the differences might be.

As so spar with the guys in your local martial arts community and dont limit it to your self to just sparring with shaolin do guys. Go out while you cross train a little test your own skills again I disagree with throwing out techniques that dont work for you from your teacins but find out what works for you. Personally I tend to be a bit slower and not as balanced as I'd like to be. But I have the ability to generate power so I dont use the techniques that require lots of fast foot work and the likes.

Also you may want to record your forms in a book that can be printed by Kinko's or who ever if you want to charge for it just charge for the cost of the book. Would only be 35 bucks or so. I personally would charge for the cost of publishing but wouldn't make anyone pay a cent more than the cost. And DON'T make it a required piece of material for the school. Make it an option for people to turn to.

Worry about quality over quantity as much as possible. Your belts may have a criteria set by Master Sin The but you can try and make sure the quality is always superb.

You wont be able to change the worlds concept of Shaolin Do that is something Sin The can't even do because of the questionable things about shaolin do...Personally I know my problem with it is the money required to be spent in some schools (as has been stated by a few others its not universal), liniage, and the amount of "kata's" (which some people will always have the problem a supposed Chinese style using a Japanese term) that is claimed to be known by Sin The. Again Chan Family CLF has something like 168 Forms (I think), but is recorded in a book that describes each form so no one claims to know absolutely all of them....Including our master Chen Yong Fa.
