Dude, why'd you act like you didn't know about SD, and then a few pages into the thread admit to being a former student? It's the net so type as you will, but this seemed odd and made me curious.
WS - Good luck with your test. EM Mullins is an awesome MA, and a great person. I'm sure you'll do well.
I've been a SD student for 15 years. I haven't heard the super exaggerated claims about GM Sin until I read JD's entertaining posts on here and the KFM forum. My friend who introduced me to SD was a student during the sport center days that JD recalls so fondly. I asked him if he'd heard anything similar to what JD said. He laughed and said no. He had heard the one about the horse, but the whole "speed of light" story JD shared had him rolling in the floor, he'd never heard that one from anyone in SD.
SD has been discussed across the net for years. The same points are always made.
SD has a questionable mythical lineage. So do other MAs.
SD has some great teachers and students, and some who are less than great. So does every MA.
Some SD schools have more fees than others. So do other MA schools.
Some of the criticisms against SD are valid, some are not. If SD were all bad it would not continue to thrive. This is the Google age, where anyone who can read is able to make an informed decision concerning what ever they do. If SD is good for you, do it. If not, don't. To anyone who thinks that they are doing the public a favor by "exposing SD for the fraud it is" I say...BS. People aren't that clueless. For what ever reason, there are those on the net that enjoy antagonizing people and rehashing the same arguments. I don't see the point. I guess it makes them feel important.
The SD school where I train emphasizes proper stance work and body mechanics. A student must demonstrate more than a superficial understanding of their material before they advance in rank. Applications for the material are taught, discussed, and drilled regularly. Skills learned are pressure tested by sparring at different levels of intensity.
I have competed successfully outside of SD at the local, state, and national level. I have participated in a full contact exhibition match against an amateur MMA fighter at a national event and won. I consider that match a draw because I wouldn't have stayed ahead on the score cards if the match had gone another round. I'm not bragging, just trying to show that when trained and applied correctly, SD techniques are as effective as those in any other MA. BTW, I told GM Sin and EM Leonard about all of my competitions. Neither of them had anything negative to say. I was certainly not told to stop.
As I said on another thread, the people in SD are family to me. I will defend them as such, rather I agree with all that they say and do or not. They have never been anything but good to me.
