A ranking system allows the school to be more maketable (not that this is right) to the potential student. Another reason students like the belt ranking system is so that when they get that black belt they can go tell everyone....hey I got a black belt. It's that 'mysticism" that goes along with having a black belt. Of course as you progress high in rank you realize that a black belt means nothing. It just means you have learned the basics. if you have a commercial location, you gotta have programs like that to keep the lights on.
here in phoenix, commercial real estate goes for ~$20+/sq. ft. per month. your looking at anywhere from 2-5 G's just to pay the rent, and you haven't even touched power/phone/insurance etc.
phoenix is the third hottest major city in the world. not everybody can hang training outdoors in july. so having a nice a/c-ed commercial facility can be nice... but you gotta pay for it. |

Rep Power: 47 | | | Yes I know of the story. I'm John Dufresne's 1st Black Sash. I know all about it. Sin The' has a copy of the tape as well as John Dufresne. Sin The' has "doctored" the video to make his students look good. The whole fight was organized on Sin The's part. Dufresne beat about 8 SD black belts.

Rep Power: 47 | | | It was at a Sin The' karate tournament and they were having team fighting. One team was two men short of having a complete team. John and another person from Four Seasons were sitting in the bleachers and Sin The's brother asked if they wanted to be the other 2 on the team. They said ok. When they got down to the ring all of the Shaolin Do team fighters started to attack Dufresne and his partner. This other person was also a teacher at Four Seasons owned by Dr. John Ng. From the stories I've heard Dufresne and his partner cleaned house.

Rep Power: 47 | | | ashe.....I understand that. But what does it being hot in pheonix have to do with having a belt rank system to be marketable? I'm missing the connection.

Belts help Marketing. Marketing helps business. Business helps revenue. Revenue pays the bills. AC stays on. Less people suffer from heat stroke, and more people can push themselves without having the environment hinder their training.

Rep Power: 47 | | | Thats true. But the main reason I think that belt systems are a must, at least here in the U.S. is because most people want to have some way of measuring their success. In this way it makes the school more marketable than a school that does not have a belt system. In China they don't really have a belt or sash ranking system. Know one really cares about a belt over there and I think that is because kung fu is a way of life to them in everything they do.

Well it'd be funny if it weren't true. The paper wrote that back in the 60's.

Does anyone else find the "they" and "them" references a bit disturbing? As if all Chinese people think exactly alike somehow? The belt system did not originate in China and so is not as commonly used (although it is being adopted in one form or another by many schools), that is all. No need to look further into it for some secret of the Chinese mind or something.
Ok, that was off topic. Sorry.
