exactly.
or the flip side is that every spring all your students will quit until october, most of whom will never return.
back on topic; you can't lump all the SD schools together either. i know a guy here in town who trained with them for awhile. they went through several "head instructors". some focused on real time application and sparring, and some were all about the zillions of SD forms. i guess it's a mixed bag.
i know a guy named bruce from another forum and his school focuses exclusively on the "internal" arts. their forms actually look pretty good. |

He's not a black belt... only a couple of high $$ tests away from it though...

Rep Power: 0 | | | Oh so sorry Unk.....let me rephrase that staement. Instead of "they", most traditional Chinese schools IN china do not use a sash ranking. As I have been told by a bunch on this forum, if you read and look carefuly at every post I'm sure you could find something to nit pick about. Or is it just because you don't like me? You got me so mad that I didn't even post what I was trying to say right. So I've had to go back and edit this post

At the schools I've visited they don't. Most use a sash to tie off tops or match their uniforms for school colors or the like for performances. Most Chinese schools I visited practice in sweats or gym clothes or shorts in the summer when its damn hot.
The Chinese don't give a crap about "rank". The PRC set up "duan" ranking for the wushu crowd.
For TCMA schools, you're todai, sifu or sigung/laosi. You know where you stand. Anything else is to make it easier for westerners.

Rep Power: 107 | | | I had 2 new potential students that came to work out with me last night. They were new to the martial arts and had a lot of questions, and I did my best to answer them.
When they asked about belt ranks I answered pretty much what clfsean said. I told them that I use the ranks to help break down the curriculum into managable bits and help me determine where each student should be just by looking at the color.
They were really shocked to find out that the purpose of a belt was for back support. And I could tell they were taken aback by the idea of only 2 real ranks, but that it made a lot of sense to them. Basically I said that traditionally you were either a student or a teacher. And then I went on to dispel the "Grandmaster" myth.

Rep Power: 0 | | | yes Unk I saw your post (59) we agree about the ranking system in China but my post was in reference to your comment of me using the words "them" and "they". How would you have liked me to word that post? |

I've heard of this tape, but I've yet to see anyone actually produce it? You'd think with the # of people that have talked about this fight that the tape would have made its way to the internet by now and dispel the rumors.... Especially if both sides have it.
Or are both sides not necessarily "proud" of what's on the tape...
And while I'm already typing.... does anyone here have students? If so, is every student you have an awesome fighter or even a great forms person? My guess is that not everyone is going to be the greatest fighter or example that you'd want to have. I don't say this to bash anyone or anything but just wanted to reiterate what others have stated, that possibly not all Shaolin-Do is bad, and not all Shaolin-Do is good... |

I think the point is that the lack of the belt system doesn't have much to do with kungfu being a way of life for "them". In China, kungfu isn't a way of life for most people any more than it is here. Most Chinese (at least in the mainland) have done a little bit of kungfu through school or something along those lines, but most don't stick with it any more than we do in the U.S. In general though, people in China are more conscious about their health and smarter about getting regular exercise. But you can say that about a lot of countries |

The last I heard No one had been able to get a copy of the tape. Its good to know that has changed. I know John D and Dr. Ng once had a $5000 reward offer for it
And that fight has sucha legendary reputation. If everybody saw that fight that claims to have seen it, they would have been 100,000 people there |

Rep Power: 6 | | | Of course even if the video was put on the internet, I'm sure there would be claims of it being doctored and no telling what else. I guess sometimes, things are better left buried. | |
