Rep Power: 147 | | | I didn't know Snake was its own style.
Anyway -- the best way to become a good martial artist is to find the best school in your area and train as hard as you can, even if it's not the style you want. Then when you have the means to go and learn the style you want, you'll have developed good training habits and a general knowledge of martial arts which will carry you a long way.

Rep Power: 77 | | | Where did you hear of “Snake” being a style all of its own? Perhaps that would be the best place for you to start? Or alternatively, you could learn a good southern kung fu style, most of which contain elements of snake.

Rep Power: 220 | | | Some systems hold Snake as it's own style.
It has empty hand and weapon forms, qi gong, conditioning and training drills.
But still, learning from books/video without a skilled instructor will not teach you all the complexities and nuances of the style that you need to know to do it properly.
I know, I teach it, I know 3 different Snake systems, could not have learned any of them without an instructor's guidance.

Ummm… doesn’t that imply that rather than being a style of its own, it is a sub style or component/element of another style… or are you making a distinction between System & Style? If so, what distinction are you making?

Rep Power: 220 | | | Snake has certain classifications in how it is performed depending upon region.
Emei is different than Wudan is different than Shaolin Snake.
While each of those three is it's own MA system and has off shoots, it holds Snake as it's own complete system using it's methodologies and techniques.

Rep Power: 220 | | | To make it more clear.
Snake is it's own system, but there are 3 styles of Snake.
1.) Cobra
2.) Viper
3.) Python
I've written a bunch of stuff about all that before and don't feel like doing it again, do a search for Snake style or Shaolin Snake style and it should pull up some of the other threads where I've discussed this before

Rep Power: 0 | | | Yes, snake is a style all of its own. I know a little snake style just because it's part of Sil Lum Kung Fu (tiger, snake, leopard, dragon, and crane) curriculum. One of my teachers however specializes just in snake style. He is very good at it. I would be happy to give you his name and phone number. He may know someone in your area to referr you to or give you some advice. I can tell you that most of the strikes are spear hand strikes or two finger strikes and most are to the eyes or are pressure point strikes and nerve strikes. The snake stylist is sneaky and deceptive. training for snake style envolves a lot of finger and wrist strengthening exercises. my teacher that specializes in snake can break patio tiles using his finger tips by doing a spear hand strike. He can also do the famous Bruce Lee 2 finger push ups. Thats how strong his finger are. If you would like his number then send me a private message. |
