Rep Power: 41 | | | Choy Lee Fut Questions? I went to my first Tai Chi/ Qigong class last night and then stayed for the Chan Family Style Choy Lee Fut. Located here in Augusta Georgia. I had an excellent time though it was a bit hard to get the Sifu to talk about money and he actually had his Sihing teach the class. What I am writing this post for is to find out any and all information I can from those who have more actual experience with the Chinese martial arts than I. Some of the Questions I have are:
It is said to be a southern style, but reminds me of a Northern or a Long fist style. Is it a southern style with just a longer range more similar to the northern styles? I may be mistaken and if I am I would really like to know. All the moves seem to be practiced at full extension. The reason give is that way we can go from fighting at long range to short and be just as comfortable. There was some short ranged training to just didnt seem as much. And I came during a test night so my experience was rather like a whirlwind.
Sorry for the Rambling Im just excited about starting a new style. Unfortunately I dont know if I will be able to afford it. Though the price is rather reasonable I think. $65.00 for any two classes a week or $85 for any 4 or a new students special of $99.00 for 6 and a half weeks.
Anyway please let me know anything yall can. Thank you. |

Rep Power: 6 | | | Keep Going CLF has both northern and southern within it. Most CLF you see will be practiced/performed at full extension. For practical purposes, the reason in the beginning is for the student to learn how to turn and generate power with the waist and shoulders. Once a practitioner learns to open up, create power with the waist and shoulders, the moves can then be shortened and used effectively within a much shorter frame. |

Rep Power: 41 | | | Actually I think I may like it better than Karate, but I dont know how long I can do it for in Jan I start working 2 to 11 for 3 months. So I dont want to start then stop then start again. But its all part of being in the army I guess. So is going to school for free so there is deffinatly a trade off. |

Those prices though seem closer to Atlanta prices than I thought there'd be in Augusta.
Oh well... also since you're on post, look up LeTerian Bradley (not sure of rank or MOS) if he's still there. He's a MMA monster type that uses Baji as his striking background along with BJJ. He also did CLF when he was younger.

Rep Power: 41 | | | I know the prices are much higher around here on most things than I remember or would have expected. From what I've been told from people who have been here for a while is that in the past months the prices have bommed skyward here. The market for buying or renting is still low but everything else is going up. Gas is around $3.03 off post last time I checked. |

Rep Power: 35 | | | Oh yeah... prices here have just taken off on everything... it's like we're expected to have endless supplies of $$$ for everything when there's just none... then you add the drought to it... It's enough to make me seriously want to go open a beachside taco stand & surf shack in Costa Rica...

The quote below is from this URL. History & Lineage of Choy Li Fut - Plum Blossom International Federation | “ | Although known as a Southern system, Choy Li Fut kung fu has its origins in both Northern and Southern China. The system's founder, Chan Heung, had three teachers, two from the South and one from the North. Choy Li Fut is one of the few kung fu styles that is strongly influenced by both Northern and Southern Chinese kung-fu, combining the long arm techniques of the South with the quick agile footwork that characterizes Northern China's martial arts | ” | |
As for the cost, well it is a very expensive thing to take up, worth it, but you do make quite the commitment in finances, as well as time and effort.

One of the nice things about studying CLF, is that it is one of the more popular styles right now, so you can find a CLF teacher in a lot of different places. So, even if you get stationed elsewhere, there is a good chance you can find a CLF teacher there.
I know both Chan Family CLF and the Plumblossom International Federation have schools all over the world, and that is only two CLF organizations of many. | “ | Originally

Here in San Diego, Gas prices are around $3.40 and we have some of the highest housing and rent in the nation.

Anyway -- Green Horn, let your instructor know that your shift is changing for awhile and ask for any drills you can do on your own. Probably at this stage you'll be told "practice stances" and any other exercises you've learned. It's more difficult to do outside a group class setting (less motivation) but it can be done.

3 years should give you lots of good time to see & feel CLF.

Rep Power: 41 | | | Oh, Ive already decided that I'm going to be trying this out. 6 months to a year from now should tell me if Im going to stick with it. You know answer the questions if I enjoy it or not and if the army gives me enough time and all (which with this NCO and schedual there is no excuse). I just want to know everything I can about it. |
