Rep Power: 41 | | | Choy Lei Fut Roots Im currently researching all I can on the Styles that made the Choy Lei Fut System.
I know that the the Styles that make up choy lei fut are actually in the name, they are:
Choy Gar
Lei Gar
Fut Gar
Originally I thought Fut Gar was the northern element to the system but last night I read that some believe it was Choi Fook, founder of Choy Gar. Which is a southern system. Choy gar is also said to be a veriant of snake. And that it resembles the movements of the Rat.
Lei Gar may have brought the Leopard into the system.
And Fut Gar all the palm strikes.
Ok thats basically what I have found from the web searches. If anyone knows something I missed please tell me. I was researching this because I just tested and I had to preform 1/2 of Ng Lun ma. Anyway I noticed that there was A) lot of a horse stances and B) Most of the hand movements where either open hand with the fingers straight or tiger claw. So I was trying to research that a bit and where the forms came from and there names translated and the likes.
Thanks,
Mike |

Eh... not quite so much from all I've heard/learned.
Choy is reference to Choy Fook, one of Chan Heung's teachers.
Li is Liu Yau San (Li Ga) & one of Chan Heung's teachers.
Fut is reference to the Siu Lam roots of all he learned & respects to his uncle that started his training. | “ | Originally

His first two teachers, his uncle & Li Yau San were from the Fukien temple. He most likely learned something along the lines of a early Hung Kuen from his uncle & then the skills of Li Yau San. Choy Fook would've been the nothern influence on his training.
As far as Fut Ga, it's a catch all name in the south for Siu Lum based stuff. There's at least (I've seen/heard of) 3 different Fut Ga's out there that aren't like each other, but you can see they all share the same root. Then there's a Buk Sing school in Canada that calls itself Buk Sing Fut Ga rather than Buk Sing Choy Li Fut. Not a big deal, but there's another with the "Fut Ga" name. | “ | Originally

One thing to remember about Ng Lun Ma... it's stance builder. Not so much emphasis on much else as is the horse in it. Ng Lun Ma & Ng Lun Choy are supposed to have been sets created by Chan Heung himself for training purposes.

Rep Power: 8 | | That book is a hundred bucks!! I'm not sure how many they have printed. Do they have an english listing of the first two basic forms? If they did, I'd probably get it just for that. And the historical stuff. And for sense of perspective for their other schools. And for their training philosophies/methods. And for the ching gong dummy diagrams/build instructions. Okay, so maybe it's worth it.
In Doc Fai Wong's book, the first two forms are absolutely essential to learning how to play CLF. Building waist power. Etc. There are useable techniques in it, but I'm never able to extract anything in the usual way. I just rely on the Bagua Hands for stuff to hit people with. Easier. |

Rep Power: 59 | | | It has many forms by name, and some short descriptions. Talks about history and training/fighting principles(very valuable imo). Talks about chi kung, lion dance and also gives rundown on the major Chan family schools around the world. (Ok i'll be honest, half the reason i bought one is 'cause i'm in it!) Lots of glossy photos, many drawings.
Hardbound books are pricey. There were plans for a soft cover, but i think that when all was said and done, those would have been around $70, not that good of a deal if you really think about it....

I know that his teachers where Choy Fook, Liu Yau San, and Chan Yuen Wu. When I as researching them I find several references that Choy Fook was the Founder of Choy Gar and Liu Yau San the founder of Lee Gar. So thats why I thought Choy Gar and Lee Gar. I didnt know Fut Gar was a catchall. |
