Wow, Sammy. That's profound. Made me really think.... and I think sums up a lot about martial artists.... no... fighters (because they are not the same thing) that most of them may not even think about.
In addition to many other things, I think the most important aspect of martial spirit is always seeking that next contest to better one's self. This was embodied by the fictional character Ryu in Street Fighter. Never cared about winning or losing, only looking toward the next fight so he could learn and grow as an individual.
This is why I have always felt that actual fighting, physical conflict, is essential to becoming a martial artist and developing skill. People who never immerse themselves into it will never know whet it feels like and can never transcend into that next level.

Martial spirit is not dependent upon winning or losing, only seeking.

I actually think Akuma is the one who embodies the "true" aspect of martial spirit - e.g. conflict, violence, and intent. The will to "cut down" the opponent no matter the circumstance, always striving to be stronger, and showing no mercy in combat. Ryu is a bit too soft, he has a different philosophy than Akuma and the innate philosophy behind his fighting style also.
But I like how you bring up Street Fighters.

Rep Power: 39 | | | Who the f*** is Akuma ? If he wasn't in Streetfighter 2 Champion Edition on Arcade, he doesn't exist.

And he was in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. The last of the "original" Street Fighters series.

Rep Power: 0 | | Martial spirit to me is everything aaradia has said. It's giving 110% during class, it about trying to gain as much knowledge as you can, and trying to perfect everything that you've learned. It's also IMO trying to set a good example in your attitude for others to follow. By attitude this could mean anything from your desire to learn all the way to your attitude towards your elders (respect, honor, and all that B.S.......LOL. Just joking). |
