As if there is some imaginary barrier between the range at which a kick happens and that of a punch or elbow...

Yet the differences between free-movement and say the clinch are much more marked in terms of mobility, techniques available and the amount of control you can exert upon your opponent (or have exerted upon you).

Free movement I see as stand up and can be in any "range", while the clinch will bring you into close "range" and ground will eliminate any "range" from free movement.

For myself, nothing matters until someone steps into my sphere. Where that sphere resides is my decision.
