Another piece of advice. If you're gonna spar people don't spar other guys that are also green. It doesn't help you one bit at all, just turns into a brawling match with no technique. Spar with more advanced guys, take it easy at first, and get your techniques down!!!

Be smart about building up your strength. It is so easy to go gung ho, but don't overdue it and injure yourself. Nothing dampens enthusiasm for a new endeavor like injury.

Work out hard, work out often, but don't think you are going to match the advanced students right away. Listen to your body if it says it needs rest for a day. In your gut, you know the difference between feeling lazy for a day and needing rest to recuperate. Allow yourself the recuperation if needed. Make sure you know the difference between working through soreness and feeling the twinges of injury that needs to heal.

As I mentioned in another thread, my first instructor used to tell me "martial spirit, not martial stupid."

Hey, the CLF contingent grows on DL yet again. We're slowly taking over!

Lol, and very good advice...

Vicious... but true.

Make sure the broomstick is on the TOP of your thighs say near your knee, not at the joint of the hip. That's cheating.

Yeah, no pinching it with your gut etc.
A Pak Hok Sifu showed me that one. She said it is good because you have to stay relaxed in your upper body as you eat and chew...
After you can handle that you might even think about Lion dance too, that is a great workout.

The lion is a ***** of a work out. Good for the cardio & fu though.

Another one I like more than doing static stuff is picking a set ... Siu Sap Ji or Siu Moi Fa, let's say. Instead of blasting through X number of times, I'd do it once... at 30 to 45 seconds a posture. It beats static stance work & I remember being told the SF Hung Sing school started that out here in the states because Lau Bun thought the static training was bad for you & built bad habits. I know we do static stances to warm our legs, but then will do a level "X" set that takes 10 to 15 minutes depending on the length of it.

Also very good, i use three breaths per posture with about 6 sec. each inhale/exhale, so 36 secs? Guess we're on the same page..

When do we break out the teacups? I hear beginners are allowed to use plastic teacups at first. All that china breaking is bound to cost a lot of money.

Chinese names for the basic stances

From The Hung Kuen side of things but should translate to CLF too on a real basic level.
CLF does have other stances but I don't know the translations for those

4 level horse- Sei Ping Ma
Forward or bow and Arrow stance- Ji Ng Ma
Cat Stance-Dui Ma
Cross Stance-Kei Lun Bo
