Rep Power: 0 | | | Shaolin Do Fall Gathering 2008 I just wanted to express my opinion on what I watched on youtube last night when I watched 2 brown belts sparring at Shaolin Do's annual fall gathering tournament. It was absolutely the worst sparring by 2 brown belts that I have ever witnessed. It looked like the two people were going in slow motion, they were barely making contact with each other, and the center judge was stopping the fight every 3 seconds to call a point (whether there was a point scored or not). It was pathetic. It's no wonder SD gets such a bad reputation for being crappy. I wish I could post this clip but my work computer will not permit it. If you want to see a poor display of martial arts then go to youtube and type in Shaolin Do and it should be the first clip that comes up. It's entitled 2008 Shaolin Do Tournament. It's worth it to go to youtube and watch it, especially if you want a good laugh. |

And the big question, who (censored) cares? |

Rep Power: 0 | | Though it is pretty horrible, bad foundation, bad form, little true power distribution.
If you were in a real fight and tried using this, you'd probably end up hurting yourself more and save your opponent the trouble |

See, it is pretty bad sparring isn't it? It just gives me more ammo to use against these brainwashed cult people that follow Mr. Jim Jones.....I mean Grandmaster Sin around like he's a god. |

Rep Power: 82 | | | ok, do they have sparring rules like the Olympic TKD?????
Did I miss where either person tried to throw a single punch of any type? Was it blocked by the angle? All I saw were kicks............
Granted, I only made it 2/3 through the video.

Rep Power: 100 | | | Actually, we had a lot of discussion on Shaolin Do here 10 years ago. My quintessence was, it's some sort of Karate with up to non-existing ties to Shaolin, BUT, the people who were filmed sparring back then were doing very good sparring for a karate school. They were quick, nimble, moving well, relaxed, nothing bad about them as long as they don't call that "Bagua", "Shaolin" or "Baji". That's why I wouldn't engage in all that SD bashing afterwards. If you look at some dreaded "Krav Maga training", they were doing the very same sort of orchestrated "defense" games, with next to no working moves, with the "attacker" just dropping to the ground whenever remotely touched by the "defender". But Krav Maga is handed as the Schwartz of self-defense ? I don't slam people based on the name of their training or school as long as they train WELL. And I don't praise someones training or level just for the famed and notorious name of their school either, whether it's military-this-n-that, Krav Maga, Speznaz bla, Fairbairn bla, or whatever.

Rep Power: 82 | | | Excellent points Nik. As for me, I hope what I said did not come across as bashing them, as it was not my intent. I just get really confused watching that all kicking style of sparring. I just don't get the point. I find it very strange to spar like that.

Rep Power: 0 | | | Another Merry Go Round Point sparring is tag, no matter what the rules are or which styles are sparring.
The rules for the guys in the clip are: No head contact, light to medium body contact. No knee traps, small joint locks, etc. One point for a punch, two points for a kick, three points for a take down followed by a strike. These rules change the strategy and intensity of the participants. I've seen far worse clips on you tube from other styles, but they don't get nearly the level of crucifixion that any SD video does.
The OP of this thread is a well known SD basher who apparently is still having some difficulty dealing with his traumatic experiences in SD at the tender age of 13. So consider the source and the intent when commenting.
All styles have students of varying skill level. I think anyone regardless of their ability level should be shown a measure of respect simply for opening themselves up to public opinion. This practice is supposed to foster growth in the MA and strengthen the MA brotherhood that we are all part of, not be an opportunity for immature people with childhood grudges to sort through their personal issues.
The OP has been asked to display his superiority to those he ridicules by posting his own videos, but he has yet to do so, claiming lack of video equipment and tecnological ignorance. |

I'm just the first person on this thread to ask you to back up your keyboard fu with some video. Over on the KFM SD Mega Thread many people have echoed my sentiments concerning you and your issues with SD. I'm in Lexington once a year, and I usually bring my camera. I thought you and your boots were going to come by and say hello at this year's gathering? Did I miss you or were you not there? You're funny dude, and I have a ball messing with you. |

I didn't have a way to get there. My car is in the body shop getting repaired. $4000 worth of damage. I still don't have my car back. I think I might be getting it back tomorrow. It had some major damage. Did you compete? | |
