Is that the way the form is regularly practiced or was it adapted to tournament-style Its definitely cool and Abel shows a lot slick movement, but there is that weird start and stop I am curious about. It was very prevalent in the Karate tournaments I went to, and surprisingly the couple of Kung Fu ones as well. Is the start-stop thing just for show

Sifu could answer that question alot better than me ,but which start and stop movement are you talking about The reason i ask is because some of the pausing is used for observation ,like in crane techniques where the crane beak is tilted up in an observation type movement.
Also it was a tournament ,so forms are done differently for performance. Usually forms are changed for tournaments also. Also that was a Kung Fu only tournament ,it was'nt an open tournament.

Rep Power: 111 | | There were several instances where the action stopped when it felt like it should keep going. It'd be cool to see it done non-tournament style.

LOL...
that reminds me of what my instructor said when he and his posse of Eagle Claw Bums first started doing competitions in the States...
they got disqualified for being too fast
they trained forms on full speed, no stops and because of that the performance of their forms was "not (long) enough..."
so they had to put stops in them and it's really funny to see those old tapes...
they're just going as fast as they can and then you see them thinking: "oh yeah... ehhh..... a stop... I need a stop..." and then they just stop and stand in a dumb position
this performance was better tho...
Sifu Able knew where he wanted to stop
thnx fo the clip big guy!!!

Rep Power: 111 | | Heh, yeah Chief I heard the same thing. At the only tournament I really competed in with Kung Fu I did a form at full speed and intensity in about 30 seconds. Everyone else was taking 2-4 minutes and had a lot of dramatic pausing. I figured I would get scored lower than I did, but actually I beat one of my Seniors who did a form that went to the max time limit!
But yeah, Abel makes it look pretty easy there! Nice work my friend.

I just caught this. I've been away for a couple of weeks. No wonder I've exceeded my bandwidth limit.
1. form was 1/16th of total. (IOWs, a small piece)
2. Form was curtailed to fit tournament needs.
3. All stops were placed at the end of a technique to show. However, a form is not a string of 1000 techniques all on one person. |

Rep Power: 14 | | | Oh , if I haven't mentioned it before. That form won me first place at the Lee koon hung '94 world invitational in Instuctor level northern forms. Against 34 competitors from around the world including asia. You can see the back of brendan lai's head in the video.
Side note, our guys won all the black sash sparring too. Continuous and with contact. |
