Mas Oyama's extensive knowledge of the martial arts reached far beyond the technical aspect. He was an avid reader with an insatiable appetite to acquire as much knowledge as he could about the martial arts. This passion for knowledge drove him to seek out anything published on the subject. However, he was not satisfied with just reading about the arts. He would visit dojo (training hall) that practiced the various systems he was reading about. This allowed him a better understanding of the philosophies as well as the methodology behind each art. This thorough investigation of the Asian martial arts taught Oyama many things. One of the many things Oyama learned was that all the arts had something in common. This commonality was a supreme test of strength and endurance and only one out of the many hundreds of students in each art who attempts such a test is triumphant. This victory placed the student in a position of remarkable achievement, one that was respected and admired by all students of their art. Oyama knew that such a test was necessary for kyokushinkai. | ” | | |
