Rep Power: 41 | | | Punching workout for the Bagless or Budget minded workout for the spatially challenged... There's a new blog entry added: Punching workout for the Bagless or Budget minded workout for the spatially challenged... | “ | Like many members of Dragonslist.com, I'm rather short on space (and rather budget conscious) however I felt that a heavy bag workout was something missing from my weekly workout program. What to do? Well regardless of how I re-arranged the furniture, or how earnestly I tried to convince my wife the many merits of a heavy bag in the Family Room (Look honey, think of it like a giant black sweaty hanging plant..), I remained bagless and unhappy. So, what did I do? Read on for the answer..

Rep Power: 41 | | | Thanks, after thinking on it further, it's not a perfect replacement for a heavy bag, but it works in a pinch.

Rep Power: 153 | | | Nah, I like it. I saw a resistance band on sale at a store and wondered if it would be useful for training at home, so punching drills are a good idea. My initial thought is that the impact training provided by a heavy bag can't be duplicated with the band. But it looks good for developing strength & form. I might just pick one of those up and try it.
Meantime, the search for a heavy bag substitute in my tiny apartment goes on...

Rep Power: 41 | | I concur with you, bands aren't a replacement for a good bag, but heck in the postage stamp places you have to make do.
Or I just have to find a way to sneak in a heavy bag when Mrs. Hazmat isn't looking...

Rep Power: 10 | | | sounds okay- though as some people outlined in the wearable weights thread
- go easy with it. don't put so much speed or explosive power into it or your elbows may suffer.
also - I'm not trying to put down what you say here, but surely punching with a bag provides resistance at the point of impact, wheras weights give the hand more momentum, and actually 'pull' it when you stop your fist..
I haven't tried this myself, so I wouldn't necessarily know - this is just the way it seems to me. |

Rep Power: 87 | | | My sifu urged us to start with 1.25 - 2 lbs weighted gloves. This way you can get the feel of how the power is supposed to flow, more like being pulled. This helps you think about coordinating your whole body behind the punch, not just pushing or throwing it out from your shoulder. It's also great to do your forms with the weighted gloves. I can still perform my mantis hooks and punches with them, and when I do the form without them, my energy flow and power look much better.
