Shaolin 5 Animals

There's a new blog entry added:

Shaolin 5 Animals

SHAOLIN 5 ANIMALS

One of the key systems at the heart of Shaolin, 5 Animals teaches a practitioner the movements and techniques of the traditional animals, being; Tiger, Snake, Crane, Leopard, and Dragon. The 5 Animals is taught in a two fold process, the first being as a complete form which encompasses the basic movements and techniques of all said animals into a single structure, and then progresses into the training of the entire system of a chosen animal, which includes philosophy, methodology, strategy, conditioning, qi gong, techniques, and said animal’s forms and fighting characteristics.

Hey Mei Hua,

Thanks that article brought new meaning behind the characteristics of each of the 5 animals. Generally when speaking of each of the characters a practitioner begins thinking of each of the animal in techniques. So its nice seeing a different approach, which provides a more indepth look behind the system.

Thanks Chang, I too often find it the case that animal practitoner's often only know the techniques, but as they were taught to me so I pass them on.

It is important to remember that each animal style is a complete system in it's own right and as such has the variety of substance that most other systems do. Techniques, philosophy, strategy, qi gong, meditation, and the likes, unfortunately that is not often taught much anymore, one should look at it like that each animal style is not only a fighting system but a spiritual entity, a way of life, the best practitioners take that to heart and live the animal they practice and so that style often works better for them than someone who just does techniques. If you become the animal you think like that animal, you grasp the hidden aspects of that animal system which may not be evidently clear to the regular layman and so it works better for you.

Hey Mei Hua,

Well said, I agree with you completely. Actually exactly what you said about taking on the spirit of the animal is what is taught at our advance levels. So its really neat hearing someone else talk about it. You really dont hear to much about what was being said. I see for the most part people will take on the attributes and techniques of the animals but never the true spirit like you put.

take care,
zach

What? You mean just because your sensei teaches you something called tiger claw doesn't mean you are learning Kungfu?

OMG!?

I'm telling you, get it from a video game! That's the only way to learn real martial arts

Unfortunately that is true, techniques alone do not a system make...

Actually I use to learn alot from video games. Until I tried doing some of the technqiues needless to say doing four kicks in the air is easier on the game than in real life. But I still like M.A. video games.

take care,

Interestingly enough, one of my brothers picked a form up off of a video game, Mui Gun=Magic Staff, the form done on the game was the same done in our system, so some games do actually have real martial arts in them, you just need to look...
