"Kalaripayat" or one of it derivations is possibly the oldest, still practiced fighting systems. It has been said that Kalaripayat is an incarnation of the original "Mother" martial art that is responsible for the martial direction of many modern or traditional fighting systems.

Formal standardizations to the system in the 1100's and 1200's may have preserved or lost some of the original flavor that did influence the foundational martial arts of China; arguably the forerunner of many of todays martial arts.
