Rep Power: 35 | | | I know that each person needs a certain amount per night. I need more then the average person. But regardless, its good to get seven at least.
If you DONT get enough sleep, all your training is for nil, as you can at best impede it, or at worst, reverse it. |

I find if I don't get enough sleep my concentration suffers plus I become irritable.
During the night the internal organs need to rest and regenerate but the amount of time needed depends on age and other factors. As you get older you need less sleep, also meditation practices and Chi Gung type stuff can do something to replace it. There are some well known studies on sleep deprivation and how it has detrimental physical as well as psychological effects including hallucination and psychosis. REM sleep is also important, people don't just need to sleep but they need to dream as well.
What time you get to sleep can also be important, my teacher said that one hour before midnight is worth two afterwards and the Tibetans say that you should not sleep during daylight hours because evil spirits may enter your body.

Rep Power: 155 | | In general - a couple of weeks 12 hours a night to catch up and then 7 - 8 hrs is what most people get with the option - to me that means that's what they need. What I need varies enormously with time of year (I never have adapted to this seasons business, if it's dark, I sleep), what training I'm doing, and workload.
Interesting article on sleep patterns and problem solving at http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story...601557,00.html I would guess the original nature article is more detailed.
The suggestions about diet and sleep are interesting. Does that mean you need less sleep if you're a vegetarian?

Rep Power: 59 | | | When I was in the military I never ever got enough sleep--and it showed.
Now, even if I get only 3-4 hours, I still have plenty of energy the next day but I can really feel the drag and hate when I dont get a full 8. I love sleeping as much as the next guy but once Ive been alseep for about 8 hours my body flips a switch (kinda like the hurricanes this year) and Im up, eyes wide open. Its a curse I think... |

Rep Power: 69 | | | Yeh, it's not just brain stuff. Eating does effect how much sleep you need, if you drastically lower your caloric intake (vegetarian or not) you will not need to sleep as much, you will also feel cold even when it's 75 degrees farenheit and sunny outside................

Rep Power: 155 | | | To answer the original question - I find the amount of sleep I need varies with my training rather than the other way around.
Any one else notice certain internal training makes you sleep like a baby for hours and then just want to sit while other stuff has you wide awake and ready to go after 4 hours light rest?

I've found that when i train seriously, I require less sleep to keep me going. On the otherhand, when i try to get the suggested 8hrs sleep.... I tend to be alot more tired and want to sleep more.

Rep Power: 155 | | | Have you tried just letting yourself sleep as much as you want for two weeks? For most people the reason 8 hours leaves them even more tired is their body wants more until it balances out...

What i've noticed is this...
The more i sleep, the more i want to sleep. It's scary, because i've done this over a weeks time, and still seemed to be more tired.. As a teenager i could sleep 18hrs easily on a friday night into saturday, wake up drink something use the bathroom, and then sleep another 12-18 hrs.

Hmmmm, for the past month I've only averaged about 2hrs a night, sometimes less.
Not easy to do, but you can adapt to it and function normaly.
