Rep Power: 0 | | Well, obviously we should do our own research on this matter
That said, when I spar regularly and certainly leading up to a fight, I will not drink - my experience is that drinking, in moderation, slows my speed, endurance, and overall performance in the ring. Again, that is my personal experience - everybody else will have to experiment. Personally a glass of wine or a beer is just fine in good company, and makes for good times, unless of course you have a drinking problem or a problem with drinking |

Rep Power: 220 | | The best cure for the common cold?
1 pint of beer, the hops and barley help to open the respiratory passages and it fights infection.
So, by my reasoning, if 1 pint is good, 24 is 24 times better and guaranteed to cure the cold permanently |

Rep Power: 149 | | | The ones who act like they are, are the ones who get caught doing things far worse than having a beer.
I wouldn't care if my students saw me having a drink. I would care if my students saw me passed-out drunk. There is a responsibility that one takes on when they become a teacher of anything, and that is, they have to be an example. Whether a teacher likes it or not, students look at him or her to learn "how to live," not just how to be a martial artist (or a scholar, painter or sniper for that matter). It's a bit of an unfair burden but it's human nature to put leaders on a bit of a pedestal.
At the same time, for me to live other than how I believe would be as dishonest as telling students some absurd stuff like "no drinking, smoking or sex, that's all immoral." I believe adults can make the decision for themselves, and that kids should have a clear explanation of why they can't make that decision yet.
At certain occasions I will not drink, because it's inappropriate. If a lot of the kung fu students attending an event are kids, no way. If I feel it's going to impair my mood or judgment at a bad time, no way. But at more casual gatherings, with all adults, no problem.

How else are you going to get them to buy you some?
Seriously - another "it depends" - some teachers need to maintain a distance, others don't, not relaxing round your students is one way to maintain a distance.

And thus, a very nice and good response. Thanks | |
