Rep Power: 0 | | | Ideal Body Weight Here is my question.....what is the ideal body weight for someone who is 5'11 and has a large body frame? And how accurate are these body weight charts. Acciording to the charts that I read it says that I should weigh around 175 lbs. (give or take). At one time I weighed 180 lbs and looked sick. People said I looked to thin. Now I weigh 200 lbs. and look about 10-15 pounds over weight. Keeping in mind that I wrestled in high school (I have a wrestlers build) and weight lift & do m.a.'s now. Whats everybodies oppinion on these weight charts? I want to get to the weight thats right for me. |

Rep Power: 100 | | | I'm as tall as you and weigh 185 now
which is overweight for me
172 to 175 is most ideal for me
doesn't sound like much, but makes a hell of a difference
for a long time I was 155, but that was with doing kung fu every day for hours and hours and no weight ligting at all
feel a lot better at 175

Rep Power: 0 | | | Yeah, like I said I weigh 200 and think if I lost about 15 pounds I would be ok. When I was at 180 I think I was to thin because people thought I had cancer or something. I just looked sick. Keep in mind I lift weights so I have a wrestler/football players build. When in high school (17 years ago) I wrestled at 160 lbs.. I guess to much partying in college got me.....lol. |

Rep Power: 39 | | Personally if I break 180 I start looking like Im on life support. Now I am about 5'9'' with a medium to large build. The only time I have (in my adult life) wieghed less than 180 was after basic training where I went from 195 to 170 in about 9 weeks. Unfortunately I was told I looked sick, my drill sergeants actually would inspect my plate to make sure I had food on it when I got out of the lunch line and then make sure I had eaten it when I got up to leave the Dfact. My wieght range (according to Ideal Weight for Men) is between 128-168 and the ideal wieght is 160. Another chart says with a medium to large build is anywhere between 148-176 pounds. So I guess what Im trying to say is that I think Ideal body weight, Weight ranges, etc are nice for vague ideas of what to strive for but are not at all concrete or should be taken to seriously. If you feel good can run a mile or two at your own pace without having a heart attack and are basically overall healthy your probably in good shape. |

the problem is is that these charts are averages
they DO NOT take into account the dispartities between individuals metabolisms Aim for a Healthy Weight: Assess your Risk
i'm 5'11" and probably 190 pounds

That sounds about like me build / body frame. Those charts don't take into account muscle mass (since muscle weighs more than fat). If you lift weights and are muscular and athletic your going to weigh more than someone who doesn't exercise. But it does make me feel bad when I see these charts and it says I'm to weigh 170 pounds. Hell, I wrestled at 160 in h.s. and was in the best shape of my life but that was 17 yrs ago. These charts are saying that I should weight the same as I did 17 yrs ago and in high school????? Thats rediculous......lol. These charts were obviously meant for the GQ model type guy.......lol. |

Rep Power: 100 | | I'm 266lbs and 6'4" tall. I know that I am over weight, I could certainly do with losing a couple of stone. According to the BMI though- I'm obese |

Rep Power: 17 | | | Actually, my mom was recently told at a Weight Watchers meeting that the whole "muscle weighs more than fat" thing is inaccurate and that they weigh the same, but muscle is more dense than fat, hence the illusion. |

Rep Power: 17 | | | And thanks for the BMI link, FF - never calculated mine before. According to that, I'm normal (though bordering on underweight - probably just need to eat better since I work out so much). |

Rep Power: 41 | | | Wow, at 145lbs and 5'8" I must be the odd man out here.
However it comes down to performance and feeling.
I was 155-160 and while I wasn't heavy I wasn't performing at my peak, at 145 I carry no excess weight and roll/spar at my peak performance.
If you get the opportunity, get a dunk tank (
Hydrodensitometry Weighing) test done
That is very accurate a determining your percentage of body fat.
One of these days I'm going to blog post the hazmat transformation from 160 to 145, the pictures are crazy.

Nuff said.
That obsession seems to pay off, though, his chatturanga went from none to externally perfect in the space of two photos when we were working on that yoga post for his blog.

Rep Power: 41 | | | Wingy, I shot past the off ramp for obsessive two exits back.
Thanks John, I just needed a good teacher.
Honestly though, I train hard but not too much. I'd imagine I average 1 hour per day. It's just a very intense hour and it's almost 6 days a week.
