Thanks Allan, I'll have to give that a try sometime. Might have to try it without the mustard, as my wife hates it with a passion. |

Rep Power: 0 | | | Fruits good - fruit salad, strawberries, cranberry juice. Grilled salmon, Yoghurt with chopped banana, honey, and walnuts (healthyish).
On the darker side I had a big plate of fish n chips today and a chocolate sundae - still recovering hours later! |

I think I've had a salad like this only with fresh strawberries instead of cherries.

On the topic of butter, I've been told that coconut oil is really good for you, I've been thinking of switching but I'm not sure where to find it, and I don't really think I can replace it for butter/oil everywhere...

My wife got a small bottle of coconut oil to try. It seems to have a higher boiling temperature than other oils, though, so her first two tries at using it (which finished up the small bottle) kinda burned up dinner, because she had no way of knowing, and didn't adjust the cooking time appropriately. She's since bought a large bottle of it on-line somewhere, though I don't think she's used any of it yet. |

What are EFAs?
And I hope you realize that salads are pretty much junk food that people tell themselves are health food.. The lettuce itself has essentially zero nutritional value (depending on the lettuce used, it may have some value), the toppings, depending on what is there, may be quite healthy, and then most people completely ruin it all with copious amounts of incredibly unhealthy dressing (this seems to apply especially to the caesar salads I've seen, which often don't have much in the way of healthy toppings). [Of course, as Sammygirl reinforced below, salads can be healthy if they're made to be so; I'm just pointing out that most people don't, especially with caesar salads]

I dunno ... my fiance eats tons of it though. He says it's an organ meat & therefore very healthy-- but I can't get past the look & texture. | “ | Originally

Coconut oil, olive oil, sesame oil ... all these "natural" oils can be very good for you, but yes they do start smoking at a relatively low temperature. Plus heating them to the temp required for frying apparently changes their structure into the dreaded "partially hydrogenated" oils. And in the case of olive oil, the unique flavor is lost to the high heat. Better to use them at room temperature or splash them into a dish right near the end of cooking so the oil gets warm but not burned.
kungfujoe: Right on.
I do like salads, but I mix raw spinach leaves in with the lettuce leaves (and those are a variety mix, not just iceberg/romaine), add lots of veggies and sprinkle vinegar/oil or put some dressing to the side.

Rep Power: 59 | | | i guess im pretty lucky. we have fresh banana, mango, papaya, citrus, guava, tomato, heck you name it, right in the yard. i can also catch fresh fish right behind the house as well. im a real chicken lover though, but not all of my recipies are particularly healthy, though the whole grains and fresh fruit and veggies i tend to eat probably make up for those.
