Orgasmic... I mean organic

So true to my word, I started a thread. I decided to go a bit more PC with this one out of respect for webmaster (can't promise I'll always behave sir).

So, I'm reliving the organic kick. This was somewhat beaten out of me months ago when I didn't necessarily have the extra finances available (the stuff can be pricey), but now that everything is settled, I've restarted my somewhat socialistically motivated lifestyle.

Originally I just did it for the treatment of the animals. I'm far, far, from a vegetarian (shoot, gimme the cow and I'll kill it myself) but a hugungous animal lover. It started with the grain-fed, cage-free eggs (quadruple the price of other eggs), happy chickens = happier breakfast. It has since grown past that.

I actually did some research and was quite shocked to find out about the hormones used in dairy products....
Funny side note and great example of my father's lack of brain- to-mouth filter. I was about 17 yrs. old filling up a glass of milk. My father walks in and comments about how much milk I drink (I used to go through almost a gallon a day on my own). I tell him it’s only insuring the strength of my bones. Dad has a thought "You know, they give cows hormones to make them fat with big boobs for milk production. Maybe that’s why you’re fat with big breasts, you drink too much milk and the hormones are in you.” At which time I tell him that’s and interesting story, but then how would he explain my mother (skinny n’ flat, drinking equal amounts of the stuff); walk off pissy, just to have my father look at me lost “What? What did I say?”

Stereotypical dego  Gotta love him.

So years (and boobs sizes) later, I look up the hormones. Dude, RBGH (Recombint Bovine Growth Hormone) is the hormone daddy was talking about. It’s outlawed in the European Nations (like meat steroids, which some argue is more political/financially driven) and CANADA!!! Our sweet, drunken, hockey playing neighbors (god I miss Windsor) won’t inject their cows with it, but we will? WTF?? It has been successfully linked to breast, colon and prostate cancer. No other’s inject their cows with it, but we do?

So, I’m lucky enough to have met some people who work at Whole Foods and have utilized their 20% discounts. I’ve even bought organic beer (good stuff man).

Now I realize there is a good chance some of this is in my head, but I feel much healthier. I’ve never been a processed food person, I make my dinners, all from scratch, f*ck your Rice a’ Roni man-but I swear I have more energy and just feel less polluted on the inside ever since I started with the organic foods.

Here’s the funniest part....the irony and hypocrisy....I SMOKE A PACK A DAY!!!

LOL!! So I even switched those up to Winston’s because they are supposedly 100% tobacco no additives.

Hehehe, I'm so adorable in my neuroticness.

Anywho, how many of you do the organic thing? Have you tried it? I do insist the meat tastes better; you’re ensuring the employment of local farmers, and giving an animal a more comfortable life prior to their appearance on my grill (mmmmmm....NY Strip baby).

Eat organic!

i try to cook everything from scratch and if possible use organic or home grown stuff. cool on ya, so a wop eh? i took a class on how traditional meals in different cultures usually have medical benefits, and italian was one of the ones we discussed, and gorged on. mmm, love the italian stuff. as for the smoking thing, have you looked up american spirit? my dad died from smoking related lung cancer, so i have pretty strong feelings regarding tobacco, but these are worth a look-see.http://nascigs.com

I do the whole organic thing as much as possible. The whole steroids, antibiotics thing is pretty scary, glad the EU stood its ground on that one. I do it mostly for health, a bit for the environment, and some for the animals. The only studies done (a swedish study on rats) were pretty conclusive in favour of organic.

The only problem I have is that some producers seem to think it's ok to palm off poor quality organic - good non-organic is better than bad organic - imo. Used to go to an organic restaurant in town quite regularly, but the service was crap (lots of celebrities so we got ignored) so went back to the local guy who sources everything fresh from farmers he knows but not always organinc... Plus organic insanely over-priced given the farmers are subsidised either way.

I know what you mean there John. Although this one shop GENERALLY did nice stuff (i'm not going to mention the name, because other then this, its a great shop) on a few occasions, it just bought in THE WORST apples ever.

I mean its fair enough that organic is harder to grow etc. That doesnt mean i want apples that are rotting on the counter.

* rBGH makes cows sick. Monsanto has been forced to admit to about 20 veterinary health risks on its Posilac label including mastitis and udder inflammation.
* rBGH milk is contaminated by pus from mastitis induced by rBGH, and antibiotics used to treat the mastitis.
* rBGH milk is contaminated by the GE hormone which can be absorbed through the gut and induce immunological effects.
* rBGH milk is chemically and nutritionally very different from natural milk.
* rBGH milk is supercharged with high levels of a natural growth factor (IGF-1), excess levels of which have been incriminated as major causes of breast, colon, and prostate cancers.
* rBGH factory farms pose a major threat to the viability of small dairy farms. Thus, rBGH
enriches Monsanto while posing risks but no benefits to the entire U.S. population.
.
The health hazards to animals, the detriment to small farms, the cover-up in Monsanto, all the negatives attached to rGBH are in no way balanced by any benefits of increased milk production in view of the national surplus.

Ahhhgg!!! Gross! Gross! Gross!

Very topical here at the moment, Prince Charles has been very vocal on this this week!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4381262.stm

I always try and shop this way, or use small local suppliers, but there is something inherantly opulent about shopping this way (very Waitrose love) and probably more accessable to the more affluent members of our society!

You've got to love big ears.

Maybe if more of us do it the price will come down and it will be more accessible. Besides, councils are giving away allotments because no one wants one...

Don't be so hard on Waitrose - they do the best of all the home delivery web shopping services - well worth it to avoid spending Sunday afternoon in Chiswick Sainsburys

I try to get all my fruit veges meat and dairy organic. I definetly think it tastes better. I have acually had people over who eat my cheese and then go home to their cheese and tell me they don't like it as much anymore. Organic is definetly better.

we used to get all our vegtables from small organic farmers in the area

problem was, you'd never know *what* you would get every week and at certain periods you would get stuff you hated for weeks...

I try to pick out my food with care, but at times I just go for the stuff that's cheapest...

oh well....

it's all about balance right?

too much of anything cannot be good for you

This bread's for you "ezekiel 4:9 organic bread", the biblical bread. I'm in love with the stuff. I bought it cause it said organic. Very hardy, filling, good for you stuff. Mmmmm, bible bread.

:

"4:9 "But as for you, take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet and spelt, put them in one vessel and make them into bread for yourself; you shall eat it according to the number of the days that you lie on your side, three hundred and ninety days"

I eat mainly at Whole Foods and will not eat any meat unless it's organic for some of the reasons you mentioned. Have you ever tried Quorn I am not a huge chicken fan and after trying that stuff (which is made form mushrooms) I never needed chicken again!

Not exactly... mushrooms. Quorn is made from a fungus not dissimilar to the one that grows on the side of certain trees that stink when it rains, definately not your conventional mushroom :P

Results of a major study are finally out and are heavily in favour of organic food.

Leaving asside the issues of pesticides and other residue in non-organic products (yeah, right, I want to peel carrots and I'm sure that's all it takes to clear the toxins) organic food has huge amounts more good in it.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle2753546.ece

Now we just need to explain to the supermarkets that we've seen through the 80% price hikes on stuff farmers were subsidised to grow...
