Too much fish?

I eat a tin of tuna everyday because its the only thing that i can make on my own thats got lots of protein in it(for muscle growth).
However i was wondering if eating too much tuna is unhealthy for you?

Depends on what's in there with your tuna. Preservatives in that tin? Mercury in that tuna?

If your tuna is just good, clean tuna, it should be good for ya.

I love milk and cheese and eat it all the time. However at 14 i can't(n cba) to cook meat. if I'm lucky I'll have some nice meat for my tea. eggs i have occasionally but cheese and milk don't have anywhere near as much protein as tuna.My bowl of tuna gives me 35g of protein.(I weigh 110 lb workin on the basis of 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight) and i still don't get enough protein(or as much as i should like)

The latest guidelines I read last month were something like this: Young children & females of childbearing age, no more than 1-2 cans of tuna a week. Pregnant females, don't touch tuna or any deep-water fish. Teen to adult males, 1-2 cans of tuna a week is the recommended limit. Men & women past 50, no real restrictions but the adult guideline is recommended.

Non-mercury-containing fish include farm-raised salmon (which can be bought canned) and tilapia.

Another option is surimi. (fake crabmeat) It's really just compressed & cooked whitefish. You can make a surimi salad (mayo, celery, chopped/shredded surimi) or california rolls (surimi, avocado & cucumber wrapped in rice & nori), right out of the package.

And there's always protein shakes although those can be really costly compared to tuna.

My dads a Dr. and he said its fine because mercury has no long term efffects. like smoking 10 cigs everyday kills you because it builds up. but tuna doesnt have enough mercury in to poison you so a tin a day is fine. but i just wanted to get an all round opinion 'cause he can be very skeptical lol.

Mercury doesn't have long term effects ???

Click on this: http://www.google.de/search?sourceid...g+term+effects

Your father should consider giving back his doctorship unless it's in a non-medical field. There has been a LARGE pressure on science regarding those effects due to the financial interest in selling amalgam for filling teeth, and to suppress possible civil lawsuits against intoxications in work environments.

The problem is in the dose. It's difficult to gauge how much is too much, but if you eat several cans a day, and the fish is heavily polluted with mercury, you could suffer. Correct survey would need to make a test giving you DMPS (Dimercaptopropansulfonacid), for example Dimaval, or DMSA (less toxic but drastic effect, needs proper control), and test your urine and stool (3 days later) afterwards. Usually, the intoxication from heavy pollution sources and amalgam is MUCH, much higher than what you get from eating.

BTW, eating lots of proteins does NOT automatically grow your muscles. The amount of protein you get from simple meat, milk, etc., and the recommended amount of fish (i.e. two cans a WEEK), combined with PRACTICE, would more than sufficiently lead to muscle growth. If you do not get more muscles despite of eating healthily, and working out, there is something else wrong. Most often teens do not get muscellous from lack of testosterone, not from lack of some protein. But, please don't dope yourself with testosterone, it has extreme consequences (infertility, shrinking balls, etc.). If you keep thin despite of practicing, live with it. You could also pick up Taijiquan, you WILL get thick, in some places ...

Yer but i don't eat several cans a day. i just eat one and my dads being taking tuna sandwhich's everyday to work(5 days a week) for years and has been fine. its in moderation and a can a day isnt that bad. I don't think the mercury builds up, it gets flushed out of your system when you go to the loo.
And i'm erating the protein because its good for muscle repairs like after you've worked out n your muscle needs to repair. thats why some protein shakes are taken after workout.
