Soy

Recently i have been trying to refrain from eating too much meat (partially because i don't really like it). But i still want to get enough protein to build muscle so i was wondering about soy because it contains protein similar to animal protein.
I have read many different things about soy. some saying its really gud for you, but then on other sites it says its really bad for you and actually damages fertility and promotes cancers (rather than the other way around) etc.
What are your thoughts, opinions and advice on this?
Thanks

Wisey

Eat a balanced diet. You'll be fine.

The main concern about soy products is that, unless it is certified organic (and even then), one doesn't know where the product was grown, what fertilizers and pesticides were used on it, how it was shipped, how it was processed, etc.

Since certain fertilizers and pesticides are believed to cause cancers and infertility, telling women to eat lots of a product topped with god-knows-what is somewhat worrisome.

If you're concerned, purchase organic soy products. But I second what Unk says. Eat a balanced diet, protein, veggies & carbs. Don't rely on one type of protein to meet your needs -- mix it up a little. Reduce your red meat intake (westerners eat far too much in general). Eat soy, fish (especially deep-water fish like tuna or mackerel), beans of all kinds, and chicken.

And if you're really worried, just remember the comforting words of Joe Jackson: "Everything gives you cancer."

Wow I've never been so comforted in my life!

People do worry about things way too much though. Soy in and of itself isn't bad (except where there are questions about its origins, like Sammy mentioned), but when you try to replace something totally with it, that's not very good.

So yeah - Balance.

You can also try some of the whey proteins, they are animal based - but being that you just don't like meat and said nothing about being vegan or vegetarian - there's an option there!
