Rep Power: 53 | | Oh no! Soda is going to make me die!! http://news.independent.co.uk/health/article2586652.ece
"A new health scare erupted over soft drinks last night amid evidence they may cause serious cell damage. Research from a British university suggests a common preservative found in drinks such as Fanta and Pepsi Max has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA."
What are your thoughts?
Sodium Benzoate is the major preservative in most soft drinks, but it's also in salad dressings, Chinese food sauces, pickles, jams, and the extremely yummy silver polishes and my personal favorite... FIREWORKS!
((Warning: DO NOT EAT silver polish or fireworks....)
Personally I think that this is another "SEE! I told you soft drinks were bad for you!!" since there doesn't seem to be THAT much evidence on it yet. Seems like there are lots of other untested variables. More research is valuable, because if it is a serious problem we should stop using it. However... in the meantime - I will continue to drink soda.

Rep Power: 0 | | Personally never developed much of a taste for the stuff, so I'm good . But I think there's other health issues associated with soda than... DNA scrambling, or whatever it is thats supposed to be going on.
What's always turned me off is the calcium leeching properties of soda. I couldn't reconcile doing bone training then drinking a can of the stuff even on the off chance that its true! Dunno, dont think there's anything good to be said about soda beyond the taste! |

LOL Unk!
James the soda isn't the only thing that has an issue here (and Silver Polish isn't either ) - This stuff is in lots of products many of us use every day. Thanks for your input though - there is definitely more wrong with soda than just the preservative they use in it!
As a side note: I also hate pickles. I worked on a dill farm and can't stand them now. So I won't be getting "scrambled DNA" from no pickle!!!

Rep Power: 62 | | | I never drink soda anyway (or anything with carbonation or caffeine, aside from occasional teas in the winter). Most people cant make it through the day without a couple cups of coffee or a Coke every hour on the hour. I havent touched a soda in several years and Im bouncing off the walls with energy much of the time.
To me, another big part of it is the high-fructose corn syrup, which is almost impossible to get away from in the US, while being seen pretty much as poison in most other parts of the world. Everything here has it: Drinks, bread, yogurt, sodium-saturated canned foods, frozen dinners, cereal...even health bars!
We do everything we can to buy foods that have NO high-fructose corn syrup, that have NOT been overly processed; it means psending LOTS of time when we shop, but I feel I have become healthier because of it and for that reason, it is worth the time invested to check all our foods. |

Rep Power: 53 | | I have one more bottle of IBC Root Beer at home I need to finish off (Yup... High Fructose Corn Syrup AND Sodium Benzoate!), then I'm going to be off all carbonated and caffeine drinks for as long as I can stand it. It'll be interesting to see how that's going to turn out!
On the whole the wiffy and I shop very natural - the less ingredients the better. I am the bad one though, since I'm away from her healthy and watchful eye while working!

C'mon, there is nothing that is truly healthy for us. Even natural stuff is only good in moderation. |
