Rep Power: 5 | | | Fasting I'm thinking of fasting in order to help clean out my system, and build up my Qi for some intensive training I have coming up. My question is how long I should fast for? I've had people tell me from 3 days to 40 days.
I know that sexual abstinence for 100 days is benefical, but I'm not sure how long I should fast for. (Also should I continue taking my Solid herbs while fasting or stop until after?)
Thanks!

Rep Power: 153 | | | I would be very skeptical of any fast that took longer than 3 days. The body is a very efficient system despite what certain (completely unqualified) people will tell you, and can clean itself very well.
A 1-day, water-only fast will help the digestive system clear out.
2 or 3 day fasts should include juices or broth to keep the metabolism functioning. (No metabolism=no cellular activity=no cleaning out.)
At the end of both fasts, gradually reintroduce solid food (broth to porridge to soft food to etc.). Begin a healthy diet regime with lots of fiber & fresh foods.
Sexual abstinence for 100 days? I've only heard of that in relation to iron palm training. But it is done during the training, not before, along with a particular diet & herbs. And all of that must be done under supervision of a qualified instructor. (It's not just about doing it safely, you need someone to kick your a$$ if you start slipping off the path.)
The best way to build Qi is to be healthy, physically and mentally. Don't do extreme things. Eat healthy, exercise normally, make sure there is balance in your work & life -- financial and personal affairs. Especially if you are about to start a difficult phase of training. Make sure your life is in decent order so you don't have to worry about it, or you won't get through the training.

Skip all that mess. Do everything in moderation everyday and don't worry about the rest.

It's a requirement for certain chi kung practice. I've never heard it was more than that.

Rep Power: 149 | | the important thing is to keep drinking water
you will feel weak initially
until your body readjusts to low energy intake
then strangly you feel OK for a while
very odd
four days is the longest i have done it for
did a week on apple juice, water and grapes
very strange experiences
but felt great for weeks after
all the toxins flushed out
the apple juice and grape one gave me the wierdest green pebbily crap
apparently toxins passed from the liver
good luck

Rep Power: 5 | | | Thanks for all the info! Oh and for those wondering about the sexual abstinence for 100 days.....
By withholding sexual release (A.K.A-"Finishing") you help your body to store up kidney energy and Jing (Essence).
The reason this is important is because when Training Qi Gong, or Qi Gong Techniques (A.K.A-Iron Palm, Body, Internal Alchemy) you need your body and Qi as strong as can be. It becomes even more important during the internal alchemy training because your learning to take that Jing and Transform it into Energy (Qi) and then transform the Qi into Spirit (Shen).
By doing this it prolongs life, helps along progression into enlightenment, Ect. Ect. Ect.
Hope that helps!

Rep Power: 0 | | Fasting will slow you down First I need to know... Semperfu... Marine??? if so.. Semper Fi.. so am I.. 80-84
Now about fasting. I have done a lot of study on fasting and diet. The Mane thing I can say about fasting is... It Slows you Down! ! ! ! It deprived you of needed body foods and your muscles wont respond as well.
To clense your system there are much safer methods...
1 The Monk Diet... 3 Months Only Meat... 3 Months Only Veggies.. 3 Months fruits and grains... The for the last 3 months of the year mix in Small portions and 3-5 times a day. ( this cleans your body of toxins and you do several of the more popular diets. ) BUT ! ! ! Your training has to reflect the job...
1st 3 months during the meat time... Build Mass in your exercise.. High Weight Low Reps.. Build Bulk.
2nd 3 months during Veggie time.. Build definition.. Low Weight High Reps. Cut Up
3rd 3 Months During Fruit & Grain.. Lots of fresh fruit and White Rice & Dark Red Kidny Beans ONLY.. This time is for Cardio... Road Work and Tredmill.. Burn the natural Sugars..
Last 3 months... Do all and Built your mind... Study everything your brain will be clean and ready for knowledge... Keep working your body with a combination of the above cycles.. but work your brain...
Enjoy This has been one of my fiets and one I teach for years. The Monks of Tibet have used it for Hundreds of years. Good Luck |

Rep Power: 36 | | | Greetings, all, good to be back...
I must agree with Soke. Fasting is not a good idea, as it pertains to performance, anyway. I spent most of my twenties working as a fitness trainer and sports nutritionist. Along with that, I have tried fasting myself before. Other than feeling slow, as stated above, it took a while to feel "100%" after my fast. Modify your diet to help you reach your goals, and focus more intently on your training. And, to me personally, (& tradition aside, of course), abstaining from sex is one thing that is a bummer to partake of in exchange for improved Chi. Cut out the processed foods and the alcohol, if anything! If you have a steady mate, I'm not too sure that they would agree to your "sex-fast", either...

I have to admit I have not given mush success to Sexual Fasting for Chi. When I studied Iron Body & Iron Palm I was just too busy to think about it. I had sex regularly, but it was in the mid 70's so Sex was all around.
I have to say though that all of my masters have said to Block your chi was bad. you must have good flow to achieve your goal.
To go through a Sexual Fasting I feel would Block your Chi and lead to frustration and self doubt.
I feel to cleanse your body of frustration and allow your Chi to Flow with sex would be more beneficial.
But I add this is only in my opinion. |

I agree.
I have been told that complete sexual fasting was not needed, just to avoid it the day or so before and after you were going to do whatever.
Only when it comes to the really advanced Qigong should it be avoided for a substantial period of time.

Rep Power: 36 | | | Yeah, it kinda calls to mind Burgess Meredith yelling at Rocky: "Women weaken legs!!" Ba-lo-ney. Keep on keeping on, gentlemen. I, for one, will take the weak legs. I still have my hands and my teeth, if need be.
