| IME it does help to be around people who are fit (or are on their way) in an environment that supports fitness/healthy lifestyles. That can be as much an influence as hanging around unhealthy people (fat, on drugs, etc.).
Whose mother hasn't said something like, "Don't hang around with lowlifes if you don't wanna become a lowlife." It's not science, people figured this out a long time ago. If your friends eat nothing but pizza and beer you'll cave in and eat it a lot more than you won't.
But in the end it's still about choice. People make a choice to be fit, or they don't.
