Rep Power: 86 | | | Calcium supplements? Well, it looks like I am going to have to be getting this shot every six weeks for the next few years. Very low on side effects except it can possibly lead to calcium loss and the problems that go along with that.
So, I think I need to start taking a calcium supplement to counteract that. I know that there are things you should mix with calcium to make sure your body absorbs it, but am not sure what.
I am hoping all you very knowledgable people can guide me to what I need to know to start calcium supplements. What should I look for, what should I avoid, any particular good or bad brand names to look out for?
Thanks,
aaradia

Rep Power: 54 | | | My sensei was put on those, and even after taking the right precautions, his body still hurt incredibly from so much calcium.
So instead, He eats and drinks things high in calcium, and it doesn't hurt as much.
But to answer your question, I don't know.
That was just a suggestion.
Sorry. :/

Hurt from so much calcium????
I will try and eat and drink more calcium too, but I fear that just won't be adequate with this medication. Plus, I hate drinking milk!!

Rep Power: 54 | | | Yep, it hurt his bones because of something...
I'm not sure.
Something like it either wasn't giving him enough, or it was giving him way too much.
Why? Milk is the best drink on the planet.

Rep Power: 41 | | | Most aminals once wended dont actually drink milk unless its put infront of them (thats not say if they run across it they wont drink it). AS a matter of fact (this is only here say) but ive actually heard that more people than not are in some way allergic to milk. I know I am becoming Lactose intolerant as I grow older (and im only 25). Some days I can have pizza, ice cream, etc and other days the smell of milk sends me running (bad pun i know).
To answer your question I know Vitamin D is a major player with calcium and I believe Magnesium too. |

Baby humans should have human milk-most certainly. There is some debate about whether adults should drink something made for babies of another species.
I just always have thought the idea of milk was gross. Just for me, not saying what others should drink or not.
Then again, I love cheese. Go figure.

Rep Power: 220 | | Take a look at this link, it provides the calcium content of various nuts/vegetables and whatnot that are an alternative to milk, so they might be something to add more of into your diet. Calcium Rich Foods,Foods High in Calcium |

Rep Power: 149 | | | calcium citrate is probably the best suppliment
good absobtion rate
calcium carbonate is the other form of suppliment
for best absorbtion for carbonate take them after food (you dont need to do this with citrate)
plenty of sun (vit D)
seeds and nuts are good for calcium metabolism
unless you specifically need to take suppliments
i would try and get it soley from your diet
also milk is yukkkkkkkkk

Rep Power: 0 | | The things you should be looking for when taking a calcium supplement is magnesium, vitamin d first of all but it should also contain minerals like strontium, boron and vitamin k. These are important to have in your calcium supplement becuase it helps the calcium be properly absorbed into the body. And about the comment above by seh that makes no sense, his bones would not be hurting from too much calcium, I do not know what he was taking. The only thing that could be hurt from too much calcium is the kindneys or possible blood clotting but that is for alot of calcium not being absorbed properly. |

Rep Power: 0 | | | Pato got it right in my book. Most Americans are deficient in calcium (and iron), so don't be afraid to suppliment. Even though foods such as milk, cheese etc. are high in calcium, I've read the body only absorbs approximately 20% of it. |

Rep Power: 48 | | | My doc prescribed calcium carbonate, but tummy couldn't tolerate it. So, I'm taking calcium citrate mixed with Vit. D, magnesium, and some potassium.
GNC Calcimate Plus 800. That's what I came up with.
It might be a good idea to find out how much supplementation your doctor thinks is adequate, as you don't want to go overboard either. And, whether you should have periodic blood calcium testing.
Oh gosh, I love my milk to the tune of about a gallon a month, and a reasonable amount of cheese (mostly Swiss, which is naturally lower in fat) and yoghurt. If you drink orange juice, I've noticed that there are some calcium fortified varieties.
