Forget about those old stories in books. They don't have anything to do with your training. If you have the chance, do xingyi first because the number of techniques is more limited than most bagua systems. Having limited techniques allows you to go deeper instead of broader.
In the end though, you should really be trying to find the best teacher for you (i.e. one that emphasizes what you want to work on) and not simply comparing styles.

Rep Power: 13 | | | We teach ba gua first in our system then Xing Yi later. Ba gua is taught in conjunction with Tai Chi because of similar movements. Xing Yi is taught later in our system also because the curriculum is similar. In my opinion depending on what your trying to accomplish either would be good. As for Ba gua improving your judo skills, absolutely. Any supplementary training you take on that compliments your primary skill will improve it. |

Rep Power: 11 | | | i was thinking along the lines of the philosophies of the arts; judo bagua tai chi and hsing yi, they all incorporate the sphere as one of their main principles, judo emphasizes yeilding and so does tai chi, the twisting concepts of defense are also the same. xing yi i would see more of a resemblance to karate except in xing yi there are more fighting angles employed. iwas was just looking for some insight, im waiting for an injury to heal before i start training in xing yi or ba gua.
by the way,is wushu of any worthlearningor is it more of a gymnastic kinda thing. |

but it is said that Xing Yi contains the spiral in its structure. Learning to generate and contain the spiral forces in Xing Yi will give you an understanding of the spiral force of Ba Gua, which is released from your structure making you move in spirals.
So you are probably best starting with Xing Yi then moving to ba gua if you need too.
I must say thought - that if you find a good Xing Yi teacher that can give you correct detail then it will be all you need - everything is in there.
Regards
Chris
