Rep Power: 0 | | | XY in New York City Hey Guys,
Making the move to NYC at long last and it's about time I got my ass in gear and returned to the world of formal instruction... does/has anyone train or trained in the city (preferably Manhattan) and if so, could anyone recommend a reputable school? Currently I'm looking at Frank Allen's School and also David Bond Chan's, though I'm not sure if the school is running anymore; very hard to get a hold of.
Thanks in advance. |

Rep Power: 100 | | Li Tailiang had a school in NYC, but I heard he moved to China. I'm sure he has left the school to his main students, so you probably should try to contact him and ask about it.
Found this one: http://www.litailiang.homestead.com/Mainpage.html
The whole directory is here: http://www.martialartsny.com

Is Li Tailiang's school Dai Family XY? Also, I'm unfamiliar with the facility so I'm a little confused with the schedule... it seems that every class is going on at the same time. Are there separate rooms/floorspaces/teachers for this?
Buddy,
Frank's school was highly recommended by a student of Yang Jwing-Ming. On Frank's site, it seems to be a primarily BGZ-geared school, but I've heard his XY is some of the best in the city. Any comments?
Thanks Guys |

Yes, I started studying with Frank Allen about a month ago; so far I'm pleased with the class size (small) and his instruction. Check out his website www.wutangpca.com. Maybe I'll see you in class. Good luck. |

Nice, yes I been recommended to Frank too but I have no job yet so I can't take the extra step yet. I've only made 1 attempt and that is to visit Yangjia Michuan this week and I spoke via email with 1 of the senior teachers and they teach at the West Side Ymca.
Frank Allen attitude and website is very different from other sites I been to, it definately sounds he is good, and 1 of the other teachers there student of Frank has good writings there.
So you're only learning XY ?
PM me if you can so you can tell me more about the pricing. I heard of some schools offer discounts to students and seniors, and since i'm a student maybe?

yes, i am only taking xy, but as you can take whatever class you want (no separate fees/memberships).
you can either pay $15 per class, or do what i do: pay $90 for 10 lessons, good for 5 months ($9 a class is pretty damn good). unfortunately, i don't think the school offers discounts, but if you can't pay everything up-front, frank is very flexible with payment. if they could have a discount for broke-asses like myself, that would be awesome though.
hope to see you in class. |

Rep Power: 0 | | | It's going really well, dude. I'm learning a lot more than I did in my last XY school in DC... I also had to start from square one when I started at Frank's school (even though I learned the 5 fists and advance/retreat linking form at my old school) which was great, because Frank is really good at explaining the nuts and bolts of each technique, and I learned a lot of things I would have otherwise missed. I'm working on advance/retreat linking form yet again, and I'm feeling some great development.
Then again, as soon as you feel progress in IMA, it's then that you realize how little you actually know or how far away you are from being decent.
Cheers |
