I post this because I saw somewhat crude XY on the weekend by guys impersonating their best imagination of Karate, flexing muscle and things.

Nice Find!. This is Master Hai Yang from the Wu-Dang Internal school in Montreal, Canada (they're a block over from us). He teaches Ba Gua, HeBei Xing Yi, and new-frame Chen style
I agree with Nik, this is the best Xing yi out there, but also his Ba Gua and Tai Chi are tops.
Here's a couple more clips of him teaching techniques with some students:

What I don't like with anyone is teaching counters to those punches noone would do, or if he does he's not a threat anyways. Like the one with the wrong foot infront for a powerpunch, and for a jab it's way too slow and not in the right movement. Usually that is taught in real speed with real jabs and punches executed with soft connecting or finger tips touching, forehead, collarbone, chest, and the other guy needs to learn picking up the pace and crossing the movement, deflecting into various directions. This is not worth much if the incoming punch is the most unnecessary and unusual one as opposed to what every punk will throw, let alone boxers. Just so that noone picks up the defense vs. kid punches for his own practice. No reason to go full contact all the time, but the practice should cover real speed (without connecting, or just touching), and real attacks, later fakes and combos. If you do it right, also combos will fail (you have two hands, and forearms, and could dodge, and intercept).
A good means would be wearing body armor and 16oz gloves or above for the attacker (when hitting with some impact), when the defender does counters to the body. Counter to head is hard to practice, that is better with machines or mitts/pads.
