so let it quit....
why put so much time and energy in a hopeless case
if it doesn't show the willpower...
what use is there to train it for years and feel bad about yourself

Rep Power: 48 | | Sometimes a student who is well liked gets special treatment even if they don't show much promise. I kind of feel like that student sometimes. Either my Sifu sees something in me that I don't, or the club secretly voted me team mascot. Either way, I'm going to keep showing up three times a week and see what happens. I can't get worse can I

Rep Power: 38 | | | I think one of the reasons why im not giving up is that it has spotted this flaw and wants to act on it. ITs not like its wanting to jack it all in - but its hard to tell someone 'why' or 'why not' rather than the usual 'how'.
I dont know what to call it, but its like intuition. You do what you feel is right at the time. You cant easily explain why but you just do - it is this factor which it lacks.

Rep Power: 19 | | | Maybe teach said person to relax, and do it all really slow with no power (but with intent, i.e. tai-chi like)
Eventually when they get it, they can try fast with no power.
Then when they get that, they may try slow with power. (with tension)
And finally when that is mastered they may try fast with power. (explosive).

Rep Power: 38 | | | thats not the problem here
the problem is that said person lacks the fundamental ideas of just moving, judging distances how to punch, how to kick etc |

Rep Power: 0 | | | Learning Techniques For Fighting And The Ability To Apply Those Techniques Are Worlds Apart. Sparring Is Decent Start For Someone Who Has Limited Fighting Experience. And By Fighting, I Am Assuming You Mean The Kind Where Someone Intends To Turn You And Your World Upside Down. Real Fighting Is At Least 90% Mental. You Must Be Able To Stop Seeing Your Attacker As Human Being And See Him As An Objective To Overcome. Sparring Doesn't Help With This. If For No Other Reason, You Know The Other Guy Isn't Really Trying To Hurt You. Therefore You Can Afford To Hesitate And Ponder Your Next Move. Sparring Does Aid In The Muscle Memory Of Techniques. That Is, It Helps You To Learn To Employ Techniques Without Much Thought. However, Instinctive Reaction Is The Order Of The Day In A Real Fight. Also Anything Can And Will Happen Unexpectedly In A Real Fight. This Not Makes Ponder Moves Impractical, but Potentially Fatal. To Make A Long Story Short, The Best Preparation For Fighting Is Fighting. The Next Best Preparation For Fighting Is Training Under Realistic Conditions. |

Rep Power: 153 | | | That Is Pretty Cool But Don't Your Fingers Get Tired? (lol j/k, good post anyway jaimen)
I didn't see this thread last year, but I think it's still valid. How do you teach someone to fight who has no idea of body mechanics, never played sports, and doesn't seem motivated?
Well, you can't. A teacher can show the path, but it's up to the student to get on it.
I know that sounds bleak, but there's only so much motivation you can provide. You can be his best friend. You can play "tough-but-fair" mentor. You can go old-school and whack him with a bamboo stick while he tries to balance teacups on his knees. And that might get him through the basics. But to get a student to become a fighter -- you can give him all the information he needs to train properly, reach the right state of mind for training, etc. But he has to take that big step.
Li xiao long, it's been over a year now -- is that student still in the class?
(Not an instructor yet, BTW -- just a student with mediocre ability who had to make that leap not very long ago. And someone who's trained ppl in other fields and experienced the same frustration. Oh, and I did stay in a Holiday Inn last night.)
