well, in a slightly spurious half related point, as a part time lurker here i would welcome more posts from wu ming jen, just like in the old days. they made interesting reading, no one can deny that.

Ok, i would like to give a comment why i think Xing Yi is a superior art:

1. It doesnt have 900 forms to learn nor does it have 100 punches/kicks/blocks.
2. It doesnt require you to build strength through lifting weights, so you know you could train in the martial art and you would get stronger without lifting weights (For the ones who dont like bulky bodies).
3. It contains many weapons, and is very direct to the point (Each weapon has its own way of expressing the 5 fists/elements).
4. I think i have a way to get to the Xing Yi teacher and learn from him

The 4th point is about the only one that makes sense...and consiquently also the most important for you personally.

Which one did you not understand

1. Unlike martial arts like Karate (Which has around 50 or so forms/katas), Xing yi only has around 20 forms, which are either 5 step form or a 10 step form. Which means, it is _much_ easier to LEARN (Yes, you see, i say learn, not do correctly).

2. I dont have to lift weights to become stronger, i will just have to train on the internal strength aspects of xing yi. Also for people who dont like looking Bulky.

3. It contains many weapons (or at least, if its correct what li xiao long said) - Dao, Jian, Spear, Staff, Bow, Darts, etc... And it is easy to learn them yet again.

As a former Karate practitioner, my experience is that karate was much easier to learn than any internal art. Once you try Hsing-I for an extended time you might see what I mean...or you could be extremely gifted and pick it up without any problem whatsoever.

Internal strength is not magic, and those with good internal strength still have very strong muscles...they just figured out how to get the most "bang for the buck" so to speak. Practicing internal strength will make you stronger, but I don't think you are udnerstanding what type of strength it enhances.

Weapons...again, you must be extremely more gifted than myself. I am having a hard enough time learning Staff and sword as is.

Practice practice practice.

You have to remember that xing yi fighters back in the good old days werent some shaolin folk doing meditation. They were the chinese army, doing the things that chinese army folk do.

I'd like to add this to Li Xiaolong's description: Li Luoneng's routine:

- Wake up early in the morning: Practice.

- After practice, go and work on the farm until noon

- Food and tea

- More farming

- Practice

- Sleep


We were doing a movement called "Farmer Ploughs the Field", which it's like a closer, more circular version of Pi (It has a backlash movement called "Demon Hitting a Wall", that is mighty tasty ), well, the thing is: The movement is too damn difficult at first, but it's super easy for a person that has worked on a farm. I used to say that it must have been a walk in the park for Li Luoneng, and most probably, he was the one who introduced that move.

Practice only, with patience and detail, will give you the conditioning you need to develop a 'Xingyi Body'. If you'd like to add other exercises to your routine (Like Pushups), do it.
