XingYi Sparring - live training

How do you guys structure your sparring in class

Do you start off with random one-step sparring and then move on to a free-for-all, or do you just pad up and mix it up from the get-go

If you do one-step, are there particular things you work on

I ask because where I train we (myself and others) are now allowed to keep the school open for a little longer after training so we can pad up and go for it at a harder pace/more contact etc (not to everyone's taste in-class).

Am looking for ideas so we can get the most out of our extra hour of pain!

When we introduce people to sparring we tend to start of using isolation sparring – picking one or two areas you want to develop and try to apply them at say at quarter or half speed/power. If you view sparring as a method to develop attributes, e.g. footwork, rather than an excuse to slap your friends around it'll add a lot to your training. As you develop the skill to apply techniques at lower speeds you'll find it easier to apply them as the speed and power increases.

Thanks, was thinking along the same lines. Is how we did it at Kamon with our Wing Chun. Worked one-step pre-arranged, then one-step with any attack (start slow and then build up speed and giving some power), and then start introducing a kind of "I'm attacking you'd better be ready for it" type of sparring... and then completely free sparring.

Do you guys find any particular methods work well with XingYi Anything particular for footwork development of cutting the line/angle etc

Put people in a clinch/push hands situation and look for the applications to the 5 fists, then spar.
