What gets me is they are pitching as Shaolin Kung Fu and it doesn't even have the flow of it. Every thing I saw was either a "T" or "I" kata with a few single whips here and a low stance here, a wheel arms there, but still in the kata. There all over the place here. But what really got me was the "Tai Chi Karate" What!

So the school sent an enforcer just because you laughed at them? LOL. A mite insecure there I'd say.

So -- that black belt in karate -- you still see him from time to time? Because if he's confident enough to laugh at someone throwing down a challenge, he might be from a decent school. It wouldn't be Shaolin but might be worth checking out.

I like the freeform and movement of TSW. No fight I have ever seen or been in ever went in a "T" or "I".

But this doesn't mean that what mei hua said "some guy threw it together and added Shaolin to market it to people wanting to learn Shaolin kung fu," isn't true either.

While it is true that Shorin Ryu/Shorinji does have Shaolin roots, Shaolin Ke?po does not, it was an American creation.

Good info though

Remember that those are just forms you're looking at.

Also the T and I shaped forms are beginner forms, so you it may very well be someone that studied a little of both cma and jma and tried to infuse the two into their own basic form.

Yeah tai chi karate is pretty funny.

As soon as the Tai Chi karate cam up, I was like, Ya I'm all set with who ever you are learning from.

On the case of T & I shaped forms, I just don't have an interest. Mei and I had a conversation on the free form and range that TCMA has and that is what I want. No restrictions, I go were I believe my form brings me.

Spear, I'm not sure what you mean by free form and range. Do you mean that your forms don't have a set sequence of directions to them?

Rockyn is right Kara-te changed a great deal when it made the move to Japan. Origianally Kara-te was just Te a form of Okinawan Boxing. Later, travelers from Okinawa traveled to china (or chinese traveled to okinawa) and add Chinese martial arts forms to these style (which also chreated some chinese Karate styles, but very few and are almost all died out). Though at this point it was more commonly refered to To-De, “Chinese Hands”, spelled using two different characters and used really only as a generalization. Its also safe to say there was Japanese influence aswell Do to the part that throughout history Japan and China both fought over Okinawa and traveled to the Island, etc. Most styles had there own name either after a person or a region that they came from; i.e. Naha-Te, Shuri-Te, and Tomari-Te (my style was mostly comprised of Shuri-te and Naha-te, but had influences from some Japanese and Chinese Kata's seen in the "Blackbelt Kata's). When the style was introduced to Japan "legally" what Rockyn said came into play. The Characters that made up the Okinawan art To-De was identical to the characters of Kara-Te Which means Empty hand. Japan accepted and then influenced the art over the years creating its own styles and turned it from an okinawan Boxing style with a Jutsu approach to a Do. And in many ways deteriorated from there. Sorry about the late post just wanted to give everyone some pre-Japan history on Karate.

No, our forms did have a set move next but our Sifu also aloud us to venture, Exp: it may take me 2 step s to get to the next move but I'm going to makit 4, also I felt as if both Karate and TKD (to me) were to rigded in their movements as well. I like the wide flowing movements of TCMA, with not so much jumping and arm waving thank you. I hope that better explained it, if not let me know!
