Though at this point it was more commonly refered to To-De, “Chinese Hands”, spelled using two different characters and used really only as a generalization. Its also safe to say there was Japanese influence aswell Do to the part that throughout history Japan and China both fought over Okinawa and traveled to the Island, etc. Most styles had there own name either after a person or a region that they came from; i.e. Naha-Te, Shuri-Te, and Tomari-Te (my style was mostly comprised of Shuri-te and Naha-te, but had influences from some Japanese and Chinese Kata's seen in the "Blackbelt Kata's). When the style was introduced to Japan "legally" what Rockyn said came into play. The Characters that made up the Okinawan art To-De was identical to the characters of Kara-Te Which means Empty hand. Japan accepted and then influenced the art over the years creating its own styles and turned it from an okinawan Boxing style with a Jutsu approach to a Do. And in many ways deteriorated from there. Sorry about the late post just wanted to give everyone some pre-Japan history on Karate.

Well, I thank you all for the history lesson, I love history, but I think I missed whether "Shaolin Kempo Karate" is a real style or not? But you don't have to spend the time answering I guess, I wasn't really interested in taking the art, for reasons I have mentioned. But if you are willing to share the info. I am always open to learning more about anything!

Shaolin Kenpo Karate is an United States Style. The style was founded by Fred Villari. It is supposed to be a combination of Shaolin 5 Animals (It is probably 5 form Kung Fu but I dont know), Karate, Kempo (I have no Idea why its seperated Kenpo/Kempo means Law of the Fist and is really just a variant of Karate), Chin Na and possible Iron Monkey, but the website that included it made the statement as if Fred Vallari only teaches it himself with his style not apart of it. There is alot of controversy it seems because the founder seems to make a lot of claims but cant prove them.

I have read that also, but there are a few others out here that promote the same thing, which kinda confuses me. That and I'm not all to parshal to learning something someone made up. I'll go with tradition first.

Everything was made up by someone. As long as it accomplishes the particular goal you are trying to accomplish all is good. Even if its not "traditional" that does not mean that it does not have value. Though I do understand that it may not be for you. Keep searching.

I understand what you mean Spearhand it may be wrong but I always look at styles that where created recently with a scrutinizing eye. Cant shake the feeling that they're just trying to say what they think I want and the actual style wont do what I want.

'Styles' don't "do" anything by themselves anyway.

Very true Unk, but I would rather use my time in a system I know has been proven, than a style nearly no one has heard of that looks like a rip off of different stuff labeled as an Authentic and Traditional system!

Hi aqira, this may be a little off topic, I'm new here, I studied under Mr. Lannom in the early 80's for a short time, more importantly in regards to this post, under one of his main instructors who I have always admired. It was a very long time ago, but I recall that during a demonstration someones thumb was slightly cut because of a hard spot on a watermelon. Would you happen to be this man?

Actually, Mr. Lannom was the melon master, back then, at least. Aqira was on the receiving end of the blade . But if I recall, aqira was the bottle master, as in swiftly removing the tops with a strike.
In all seriousness though, if aqira is who I think he is, I have nothing but respect for him.
Oh, and nice forum...

man I have ranted about this so much here. And ist really not the art That I am ranting about. Though I will offer that I do not believe all arts are created equal. There really is some crap out there being tought.

Still dont claim to name it shaolin out of respect. When you have none of the concepts, forms, and rich tradition in place. '

Just because you teach someone a tiger claw style strike does NOT MEAN YOU TEACH KUNGFU>
