Ninjutsu/Budo Taijutsu

My question is this.....Do you think that ninjutsu is effective and/or practical in todays world as far as self defense goes? From what I've seen most of this art is made up of weapons such as sword, sickle and chain, naganata (sp?), blow gun, shuriken, bo, ninja net, kasari fundo, etc... When you take these weapons away how much of ninjutsu is actual hand and feet fighting (tai jutsu)? do they use the same kicks and hand strikes that most other styles use? Someone please inform me. Thanks.

Nope... you need to go to the Lexington Bujinkan & see for yourself. It's on the way into downtown near that bomb pizza joint before the auditorium & downtown proper.

What you just described above is about 90% crap-jutsu & 100% misunderstood-jutsu.

clfsean.....so your saying that the Bujinkan Dojo here is good? I'm really interested in learning. I'd like to know how much training is devoted to weapons and how much is devoted to actual hand to hand combat, self defense, etc... I want to learn something that is practical, not learn a bunch of ninja sword and ninja blow gun stuff that I'll never use in the real world. Don't get me wrong I'd also like to learn the weapons in ninjutsu but I don't want that to be all I learn. I really don't know much about this art other than the misconceptions I see in movies. Please inform me.

Effective? In a word . . . no. Practicing taijutsu is fun, and a good way to experience koryu-style weapons and what not, but the hand-to-hand is lacking when put next to systems like BJJ, Judo, or Muay Thai. It's still fun, and there are things to learn and apply there, as long as you go in with the understanding that you'll have to do some experimenting on your own time to see how these applications can really work.
