The November basho is on!
The first day of the tournament, quite a lot of discussion of the recent scandals including most prominently the death of the 17 year old boy months ago. A lot of talk of reforming the Sumo Association and regulating the training and treatment of young rikishi. A very important point in time for Sumo.

Rep Power: 100 | | | Baruto, a young, huge rikishi from Estonia, is back in the upper division this tournament, back from recent time spent in the lower division after injuries forced him off track.

Rep Power: 100 | | | In the final bout of the day, the sole competing Yokozuna (Asashoryu is still on suspension) lost in a stunning upset to Kotoshogiku. The cushions were flying in the Fukuoka area at that point!

Ozeki Kaio, one of the oldest wrestlers in the upper division and one of the longest-running EVER is in danger this tournament. After several disappointing tournaments recently he needs a strong showing to avoid being demoted and in all likelihood pressured to retire all together. So, the fans will be pulling for old Kaio to pull off one more strong tournament!

Rep Power: 100 | | | Kyokutenho won in interesting fashion. He sort of had a shallow underhook on the left, a hand on the head/neck of Toyonoshima with the right and, timing it just right, managed to have him turn a full 360 horizontal in the air before hitting the clay. Very interesting.
