Aikido

Hi, been a while since I posted, I started at an art school majoring in drawing.
While I have my opinions I would like to know what you think about the art of Aikido, the things it can teach you and skills you may learn should you study it.

Thanks

Unless it's actively pressure tested through realistic fighting/training, it's complete and total BS.

Aikido is ripe with overly compliant training and the idea that you can throw people through the air with a slight move of your finger and the ability to knock people out with Chi from across the room(this I know from reading 3 different Aikido forums where they all bragged about being able to do that)

Well they sound like pretty silly practitioners

To me some of the blending abilities and joint locking techniques look ok.

They do look ok, but no one ever resists their opponent doing it to them, they do not struggle, they do not resist, they do not fight back, they do not pressure test through realistic sparring and trying their techniques against an actively resisting opponent.

I did Aikido for 3 years and would never go back to it, if you want joint locks and control you'd be better off training good Qin Na or Grappling

Fair enough, I'll take your word for it.
I did Daito Ryu AikiJujutsu of the Takumakai branch however, and we had to resist all the locks, and the more you resist the more it actually hurts. It hurt less when you just go with it, but you weren't allowed to do that unless you were about to experience breakage.

Aikido (and Hapkido) come from this style, but I guess they're not the same.

Like most TMA-ish things, there are some great places to train and a boatload of bad places. Find one of the good places and you're in business.

i think that there is a lot of good stuff in aikido personally

and from my experience the more you resist the more it works

but of course as unk said there are always going to be poor skools

alot of the

'little man throwuing big blokes around'

stuff you see

are actually escapes from the locks

if the big bloke didnt do a somersault

then bye bye wrist

my biggest problem with it

was the atmosphere at the skool i went to

way to reverent for me

i like a bit of humour in my training

which is just as well

as most of my fighting is pretty slap stick

When I trained Aikido it was pretty rough and had a good atmosphere.
