Rep Power: 24 | | | I'll second unkotare's question. If a trust a teacher who teaches me complete BS, then I'd rather be taught by an @sshole who knows what he is teaching me. On the other hand, I'd rather have a teacher who is very knowledgeable who I trust than one who is a bit more knowledgeable and I don't trust him.

Valid question, because that would change opinions.

Rep Power: 111 | | | Being an @sshole has zero to do with trust.
My pro-wrestling teacher was an ass, but he was knowledgable and I trusted him to take care of me.

Rep Power: 100 | | | I think both are equally important. I wouldn't want to learn from a "trustworthy" Sifu who didn't know much of anything (what would s/he teach me?), but I also wouldn't want to learn from a Sifu with vast amounts of knowledge if s/he didn't have my best interests in mind. I think trust is a very important component in the Teacher/Student relationship, and it's difficult to learn from someone you don't trust, because you will always be holding something back.

I guess you'd pick the lock if your teacher weren't around to let you in your house. |

Rep Power: 20 | | | I would want to learn from someone I could trust and who had something to teach. Maybe they dont have everything or even a huge varity but if they know what they can do and they believe in it I would willing to learn. If I didnt trust the instructor it wouldnt matter if they knew everything in the world and were willing to teach it, I wouldnt be able to/willing to learn the stuff. |

Rep Power: 62 | | | By vast, do you mean in overall factual knowledge of martial arts, or a vast amount of personal experience with it?
The longer I live, the less I feel a truly vast knowledge is important. I used to want to learn all the sets and do all the moves and hear al the explanations, etc. As time goes, I find myself thinking a small system like WC, or the 5 elements in xing yi is a very decent amount of material to work on and learn about for a very long time. Throwing out too many things can be detrimental to ones training.
Id prefer to have an honest-to-god teacher whos been doing nothing but a handful of sets telling me in excrutiating detail what I should do differently, than I would have an instructor who can talk forever about anything and everything martial arts but might not be honest with me. |
