Part of the problem is that in this country we are so politically correct it is rediculous. I should never get papers from school in 3 different languages, or go somewhere to eat and not be able to communicate to the servers. This is American and whether it is OFFICIAL or not American English is our national language. If we go to another country they don't catter to us when it comes to communication. It is up to us to learn and to get by. America has gotten to the point that there are places in this country where it is like another country and english is hardly spoken. I can understand the Native American languages (which many tribes have lost due to them being forbiden to speak their native tounge over the years) but to go certian places in America and people only speak a forign language, well that is pushing it. It also damages the academic standards of certain cities and states as well. In Garden Grove Ca. where my nieces attented school before moving to Va. anything from school sent home was in english, spanish and depending on the area either vietnamese or korean. My oldest niece was in advanced classes untill she went to Va. When she enrolled in shool there she was a little over a year behind. We should not be bending or lowering our standards based on culturally divers cities. It only hurts or children. | ” | |
Did they have any English requirements though?

Rep Power: 100 | | | Krissy, ref. your last statement, "I think it is! And I think the fact that we don't, and expect everyone to speak English, is one of the reasons many people see Americans as so egotistical."
They, meaning the majority of non-english speaking countries, do not bend over backwrds to assist english speakers. Some schools in all places but more so in some than others require several languages. Many countries will look down on the US for many reasons. Most places that do that are reletively very small and must learn several to get by. The US is a very large country bordered only by Canada and Mexico. Canada speaks english except farther north where french is ued as primary language. Mexico is also a mix of spanish and english. The more south you go the less english is spoken.
The necessity to learn other languages in the US is next to non-existant comparatively speaking. If we go elsewhere it would be very beneficial indeed to learn the language of where are going to visit. The dire need to be bi,tri or more lingual in respect to getting by daily just is not here. Others coming here speaking foren languages can't expept us to change our language to appease them.
It is a good thing to learn others no doubt but whats going on with this country is just flat out crazy.
I have not known you to be backing liberal agendas before. Maybe on this issue because of your ability to speak several languages, I don't know.

Rep Power: 157 | | | There's a huge leap from choosing to speak Spanish with colleagues who are also fluent in it to "expept us to change our language to appease them".
Simply make it a discrimination issue to require any other language in a company that isn't involved in any markets where knowlege of foreign languages is an asset...
