Rep Power: 18 | | Training In China OK, I have been looking for a while now for a place to go to in china and train in traditional kung fu. Is there any such place anyone has any info on here It seems almost everything I find is either very vague about what they teach or teaches modern wushu. I am interested in a learning experience in asia... not necessarily china, but it has to be traditional kung fu. If anyone has had any experience training there or has any info I would really appreciate it. I am hoping to fins a pace I can go train for a month or so full time... depending on what my finances allow. Please help!

1. Do you know how to speak madarin or cantonese
2. How much money are you willing to spend
3. Do you know if most people in China are learning english because I know that everything in english in china and Japan is like TOTALLY COOL, same thing here with kana and kanji and Chinese writing.
4. Would you be planning to be staying in a hotel/motel and then walking over to the school/temple. Where would you be sleeping
Well, answer these and maybe I can help

Rep Power: 18 | | ok here's the bad news...
1. I do not speak mandarin or cantonese.. I took it on school but I do NOT know enough to carry on a conversation. I am more than willing to be lost though and just follow along with someone's movements if necessary.
2. The money thing is kind of up in the air. It depends on what I can find and how long I could save up. I could probably manage a fair chunk of change for about a month or two of full time training. So long as I had some costs before hand to save towards.
3. I have found quite a few sites from China on the web regarding martial arts schools you can go and live at and train and they all have instruction in english. BUT the problem is they are all very vague when asked about whether or not they teach modern wushu or traditional Kung Fu. I am not interested in modern wushu at all.
4. As far as sleeping arrangements I would prefer to stay wherever I was training i.e. live in training. But, if necessary I could probably find another place to stay deopending on where the school was located. A hotel or motel if necessary but I would like to cut down on my living expenses so I could have more money to pay for training. The less I spend on rooms and food etc. the more time I could stay and that is what I am interested in. It seems a good deal of the school sI found on the internet in China offer live in boarding and training but again are vague as to what they teach. I have been fairly lucky here with finding traditional kung fu masters to learn from and would like the whole asian experience in traditional kung fu. It just seems that everywhere I find is too vague about their curriculums for me to want to spend the thousands it would cost to go there and find out if they are teaching what I want to learn or not. Not the kind of gamble I am willing to take.
I really appreciate any feedback I can get regarding schools in asia that would accept an english speaking white guy to come and live and train for a month or two. Thanks in advance!

Rep Power: 63 | | Based on what I've read and heard, training at the shaolin temple is a joke...it is all wushu...flashiness and flying through the air....this is coming from a sifu I know who went there to study more. From what I can gather....taiwan would be the best asian place to go....or singapore. But to be quite honest...I've been told that the best and most highly trained instructors are here in the USA. Particularly in the westcoast area. ...not too sure why, but this makes a bit of sense to me.
I think if it was up to me, I wouldnt go to China to train...if I really felt the need to go outta country...I would go to Taiwan. I dont think I would want to live and train in communist China though....especially not being a citizen, not knowing the laws, the language, having employment, and being told the best instructors are in America (and England).

Rep Power: 63 | | Forgot one tidbit:
Sifu James McNeil has a training lodge out west, teaches internal styles...hsing-i, tai chi (chen), and a couple more....he takes private students and they go live in this setup he has...I think it is pretty expensive...but the guy is supposed to be good and from what I have read online at his site....it doesnt seem super crazy expensive. (current college student....everythings expensive )
If you would be interested....he trained in asia with some credible sifus..and he seems pretty legit to me...
here is his site: Little Nine Heaven
I kinda wanna go there myself...dont have time or money...plus I dont wanna leave my family (4000miles away!).

Rep Power: 31 | | I agree with x893 by the best teachers being in America.
First of all....
1. do you not think that instructors would come to a better country to teach (ie. America), meaning they would make more money, have more freedom and not have to worry about so many laws and restrictions
2. Most teachers are on the west coast, probably because the west coast is closer to asia, and Claifornia is there. Los angeles, Sacrameto, San Fran.. etc. These are big cities with huge populations, this is where the money is at.
I agree totally wanting to go to China (Japan for me ) but money and the language is a prob. In my opinion, English is becoming a necessary language due to economics.
x893, why do you say Taiwan What's so better about taiwan than other countries Is it because of the economy

Rep Power: 63 | | A lot of chinese fleeing from communist mainland went to taiwan "back in the day" because of its closeness to mainland China and its somewhat already populated by Chinese. Taiwan isnt communist either. A lot of famous Chinese style masters have lived there...I believe tai chi master W.Chen lived there, as well as quite a few Hsing I masters and such.
It does have a better economy and probably all the "feel" of China. It also has a large Japanese population as well, I know quite a few japanese that were raised there and then moved to America. It seems to be a little island melting pot if you will.
But I really dont think that you would find as many qualified instructors in China....not because there arent any, but because they simply would be hard to find....much easier when they speak your language and live in your country where you have more freedoms and such.

Rep Power: 18 | | | Never went to China, I found Master Chen Zhonghua here in my city (Joseph Chen) and started training full time with him. His martial arts are the real deal... he learned in Shandong China under master Hong Jungshen and master Feng Zhiqiang as well as a couple others.. No need to head to Asia yet but I am still planning on it!

Rep Power: 5 | | | There are many "Real" master probably even in the city you live in. you should maybe spend more time looking around you. One of the people I studyed with (Arlo Chenery) Spent 6 months at "Shaolin" only to find that what he had at home was what he was looking for.
Look around it might help. |

Go to The Beijing University of Physical Education-Ti Yu Da Shui (I Think) Very Cheap. There are always Westerners in the foreign students dorms and they are usually martial artists. |
