Rep Power: 10 | | | a different music thread... I always see the what song are you listening to post... I like it, its funny how varried the tastes are...I thought it might be fun to get a little more into why we like what we do... so, let me pose a question, what are some of your absolute favorite lyrics in a song, ones that you can really identify with personally???
I'll start us off with a couple of my favorites...
Abit of philosophy...
" my choice is what I choose to do, and if I'm causing no harm it shouldn't bother you... your choice is who you choose to be, and if your causing no harm then your alright with me!" - Ben Harper, Burn one down
or
Epic Martial Arts Training them music
" Youll take my life but Ill take yours too
Youll fire you musket but Ill run you through
So when your waiting for the next attack
Youd better stand theres no turning back
The bugle sounds as the charge begins
But on this battlefield no one wins" - Iron Maiden, The Trooper

But unfortunately the lyrics I like the most are not exceptable for the kiddies and so I'll avoid posting any at this point, till my musical mood changes and I post some other lyrics from someone else...

But I've wandered much further today than I should
and I can't seeem to find my way back to the wood.

Maybe 80% of the time or even more, I find lyrics are secondary in interest to rhythm and tune. I might be more interested in reading lyrics than intently listening to them. A couple of lines here or there. I might like the sounds of the words, but not take in or care about meaning. Just the way I am. The selections above have some association with experiences in my life.

Dylan is obviously the king. Cohen isn't bad either. Billy Bragg is another one with a way with words. Julian Cope and Nick Cave have their moments, as do the Sisters of Mercy. A band I'm into at the moment, The Broken Family Band, have a real gift for a striking phrase.
Slow train coming and Blood on the tracks are the best for lyrics, IMO. Plenty of songs on there that mean plenty to me - Big Girl Now, Twist of Fate... I know it's cliched to like the popular stuff but Mr Tamborine Man is probably the pick in terms of "really identify with personally"
"Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into sand,
Vanished from my hand,
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping.
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet,
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming."
Cohen...
"I'll be there today
With a big bouquet of cactus
I got this rig that runs on memories
And I promise, cross my heart,
They'll never catch us
But if they do, just tell them it was me"
Sisters
When you don't see me.
Oh, it's kind of different when you're not there.
You can lease the peace of mind.
You bought a mask, I put it on.
You never thought to ask me.
If I wear it when you're gone.
Get real.
Get another
Broken Family Band:
I can't be this impressed by just a body and a mind
even the air that you breathe is all fake there, not like here where it's thick, and strong...come back and live in the city.

I coudl quote Pink Floy dall day long so Ill only do one more from them... =)

"And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest that you've
sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to
stone
And it's too late to loose the weight you used to need to throw
around
So have a good drown, as you go down, alone
Dragged down by the stone."
--Pink Floyd "Dogs"

"And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share...
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence. "
Simon & Garfunkel, "Sound of Silence"
--------------------------------------------------------
"Listen to the wind blow, down comes the night
Run in the shadows
Damn your love, damn your lies
Break the silence
Damn the dark, damn the light
And if you don't love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying you would never break the chain"
Fleetwood Mac, "The Chain"

"Your lips move but I cant hear what youre sayin.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone."

If you like to gamble, I tell you I'm your man,
You win some, lose some, all the same to me,
The pleasure is to play, makes no difference what you say,
I don't share your greed, the only card I need is
The Ace Of Spades
Playing for the high one, dancing with the devil,
Going with the flow, it's all the same to me,
Seven or Eleven, snake eyes watching you,
Double up or quit, double stake or split,
The Ace Of Spades
You know I'm born to lose, and gambling's for fools,
But that's the way I like it baby,
I don't wanna live for ever,
And don't forget the joker!
Pushing up the ante, I know you wanna see me,
Read 'em and weep, the dead man's hand again,
I see it in your eyes, take one look and die,
The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be,
The Ace Of Spades

"He's still on the loose
It seems he has done many many more
Quotes John Milton on the walls in the victim's blood
The police are investigating at tremendous cost
In my house he wrote "his red right hand"
That, I'm told is from Paradise Lost"
The one that always makes me smile is The Curse of Millhaven
"Since I was no bigger than a weavil theyve been saying i
Was evil
That if bad was a boot that Id fit it
That Im a wicked young lady, but Ive been trying hard
Lately
O **** it! Im a monster! I admit it!
It makes me so mad my blood really starts a-going
La la la la la la la lie
Mama always told me that we all gotta die
Yeah, I drowned the blakey kid, stabbed mrs. colgate, i
Admit
Did the handyman with his circular saw in his garden shed
....
Now I got shrinks that will not rest with their endless
Rorschach tests
I keep telling them theyre out to get me
They ask me if I feel remorse and I answer, why of
Course!
There is so much more I could have done if theyd let
Me!
So its rorschach and prozac and everything is groovy
Singing la la la la la la la lie
All gods children they all have to die
La la la la la la la lie
Im happy as a lark and everything is fine
Singing la la la la la la la lie

Rep Power: 64 | | | Oh look at how she listens,
She says nothing of what she thinks.
She just goes stumbling through her memories,
Staring out onto Grey Street.
And she thinks, "Hey, how did I come to this?"
"I've dreamed myself a million times around the world!"
"But I can't get out of this place."
How she wishes it wasa different.
She prays to God most every night.
And though she swears He doesn't listen,
There's still a hope in her in right.
She says, "I pray, but they fall on deaf ears."
"I'm not supposed to take it on myself to get out of this place."
There's a stranger speaks outside her door.
Says take what you can from your dreams.
Make them as real as anything,
It'd take the work out of the courage.
But she says, "Please, there's a crazy man that's creeping outside my door."
"I live on the corner of Grey Street,"
"And the end of the world."
Oh there's an emptiness inside her,
And she'd do anything to fill it in.
And though it's red blood bleeding from her now,
It's more like cold, blue ice in her heart.
She feels like kicking out all the windows,
And setting fire to this life.
She could change everything about her,
Using colors, bold and bright.
But all the colors mix together,
To grey.
Grey Street - DMB
Some people wish for changes for the better, expect things given them, but then won't work for those changes. I have no patience for such things.

Rep Power: 64 | | Whoa, weird network stuff happening on that last one. But here's some excerpts from another I like.
You gave me words I just can't say.
So if nothing else, I'll just hold on while you drift away.
Because everything you wanted me to hide,
Is everything that makes me feel alive.
I try to wear another face.
Just to make you proud, just to make you put me in my place
But everything you wanted from me,
Was everything that I could never be.
Then I saw you yesterday,
But you didn't notice, you just walked away.
Because everything you wanted me to hide,
Is everything that makes me feel alive.
The cities grow,
The rivers flow,
Where you are
I never know.
But I'm still here.
If you were right
And I was wrong,
Why are you
The one who's gone?
And I'm still here.
The lights go out,
The bridges burn.
Once you go
You can't return.
Yet I'm still here.
Remember how
You used to say
I'd be the one
To run away.
But I'm still here.
Granted people are always going to try to change you ( you do it to others as well, ) sometimes for the best, sometimes for the worst. But when they ask things of you they wouldn't be willing to do themselves . . .
