Rep Power: 0 | | | Fatherly Advice? Anxiously awaiting the arrival of our first child, within the next 4 weeks, my wife and I have been flooded with letters and tips from family and friends, with advice for first-time parents. Each piece of advice, I consider a learning experience. Being said, I would like to get advice from my second family, here at DL. Any mothers and fathers who wish to share some wise tidbits... please do so. I look forward to hearing your advice. |

Rep Power: 30 | | | I've found from teaching children that the following always helps:
To get them to do something boring, introduce something fun to it such as games or dress it up in some way. A bit like "Here comes the choo choo" when feeding.
To get them to listen to you and obey your order, speak authoritively. Don't shout, but a raised tone always helps.
These probably apply to a child a bit older than an infant, but they're still handy to remember! |

Sleep now, for you never will again
Only kidding - good luck with the bairn.

Rep Power: 48 | | | -Sleep when baby sleeps.
I use to try to get all my chores done during their nap times. Bollucks!
If you really must clean your house, wear your baby in a sling or carrier and do your work like the Yanomamo people.
-Breast feed on demand. Avoid eating garlic and strawberries.
-Keep babe away from smoke.
-Don't take it personally when they cry. They still love you.

Rep Power: 100 | | | ~Whether you believe it or not, you *will* sleep again!
~Fresh air, walks and going to the beach (or just doing anything outdoors) seems to make the baby sleep better and longer at night.
~Take LOTS of pictures...they really DO grow up fast!
~Have a family member watch the baby once a week (at minimum once a month) so you can spend time alone with your wife...go to dinner, a movie, or just stay home for a *quiet* evening!
Good luck and congrats!

Rep Power: 78 | | | For a first time parent, each day is a learning experience, and the best teacher is the baby itself, try to listen and learn what it is teaching you! (ie all babies are different so learn what YOUR baby likes/wants and don’t follow to closely the experience of others!)

Rep Power: 0 | | | Thanks all, for the advice. It is greatly and humbly appreciated. We just found out today that the baby may be early and arrive in approx. 2-3 weeks (original day approx. 5 weeks from now). We're anxious and extremely nervous, but all in all, doing great. Best wishes to you all... | |
