Zhou Long

Zhou Long
(1891 – 1919)

The Zhou Jia Quan (Zhou family style) was founded by Zhou Long. Zhou Long was born in 1891 in the village Xinhui in the province Guangdong in China. He was the oldest son of the family and has had four younger brothers: Zhou Xie, the twins Zhou Biao and Zhou Hai and Zhou Tian. The five brothers learned Wu Shu from their uncle Zhou Fangxi. He instructed them in Hong Jia Quan.
Zhou Long had very big interest in Wu Shu, tried to learn as much as possible from his uncle and finally was the best student of the five brothers. His talent didn’t remain unnoticed and so he was discovered by master Cai Jiu Yi. Cai Jiu Yi noticed that Zhou Long had very good talents to become an excellent Wu Shu expert and master. He taught him in Chay Jia Quan. Zhou Long only needed a few years to master the Chay-style. As well the Hong Jia Quan as the Chay Jia Quan are south shaolin styles of the Wu Shu. Peculiarities of these styles are a deep and strong stand, powerful hand techniques and deep treads.
In the year 1910 Zhou Long travelled to Malaysia. At his stay in Kuala Lumpur he became acquainted with a buddhistic priest. He took Zhou Long as his student and instructed him in a north-shaolin-style, the Bei Pai Wu Shu. This style decorates itself by a lot legwork and high treads und bounds.
After Zhou Long had mastered this style, he decided to combine the best und effective techniques from the southern and the northern Wushu Styles he learned. He called his new fighting style Zhou Jia Quan (Zhou family style). In memory of his origin and the master, who once taught him Wu Shu, Zhou Long told all his students that the Wu Shu form represented by him was called “Hong Tou Chay Wei”. This means as much as “starting with Hong, ending with Chay”. So the name of our school is explained “Shaolin Hong Chay” or “Shaolin Hung Choy" (cantonese dialect).
Because all Zhou brothers helped by every possible means to spread this new Wu Shu style, he became more liked and because of their common exertions and their community spirits at the spread of Wu Shu they became famous under the honourable name “Zhou Jia Wu Hu” (The five tigers of the Zhou family). At the highest point of their work by spreading Wu Shu Zhou Long died being straight 29 years old having an inflammation of the lungs. After his death his brother Zhou Biao became the head of Zhou Jia Quan. Zhou Biao was mainly responsible for the worldwide spread of Zhou Jia Quan. In the meantime Zhou Jia schools weren’t only founded in China, but also in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Vietnam, Australia, USA, Canada, England, Poland and Germany.

Yeo Lian Hock

Yeo Lian Hock
(1958 - )

Sifu Yeo Lian Hock was born in 1958 in a small village in Singapore. He was small and shy boy until he reached the age of 10. His father feared he could get in bad company and sent his son to the Nia Kwang Physical School. This school was lead by the famous grandmaster Mai Zhi, who taught traditional Zhou Jia Quan.
In these times the way, in which traditional kung fu was taught, was very strict and every pupil had strong rules and laws to heed. Some students decided the rules were too hard and left the school. Yeo Lian Hock was taught by master Lim Chin Kim. Within six month Yeo Lian Hock only learned the basic steps and stances, cause they are the fundamental elements of the Zhou Jia Quan. In this time Master Yeo considered the training to be very mindless and boring. He even thought about quitting the training. But when master Lim Chin Kim began to teach him some forms, his interest grew. Since this time he never missed a lesson.
In 1971 the school obtained the name Nia Kwang Pugilistic Association and a lion dance group was initiated. The lessons took place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The lion dance-lessons were every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Yeo Lian Hock went to all lessons, six days in a week.
Yeo Lian Hock was appointed assistant-instructor in 1973, helping Meister Lim Chin Kim in teaching his pupils. He took every opportunity to learn the art of teaching. During this time many pupils thought the training was boring and mindless just like him in the first months. Yeo Lian Hock understood the students and decided to change the way of teaching Zhou Jia. The new way the lessons were held was very successful. But Yeo Lian Hok did not neglect his own training given by Master Lim Chin Kim. He learned different hand- and weapons forms. Together with his older kung fu brother Tay Choon Hong he visited Grandmaster Mai Zhi who taught him some Pa Kua and Seven Star moves of the Zhou Jia Quan.
In 1975 Yeo Lian Hock was summoned for military service in the navy. But this didn’t distract him from his kung fu training. He trained every day to be prepared for his instructor’s exam, which was arranged by the Singapore National Pugilistic Federation. This exam is by law required in Singapore to ensure that only qualified instructors teach wu shu. In 1976 Yeo Lian Hock passed the test and registered the name Shaolin Hung Choy. Shaolin Hung Choy is the original name, which the founder Zhou Long used.
In 1978 Seet Chor Thong learned directly from Yeo Lian Hock as a student and a year later the German student of Seet Chor Thong, Frank Greinacher, who was in Singapore at this time for further education. Beeing invited by Frank Greinacher Yeo Lian Hock first visited Germany in 1980 with two of his students, Seet Chor Thong and Heng Keng Huat, to take part in some demonstrations. By the struggles of Seet Chor Thong and Frank Greinacher Shaolin Hung Choy Kung Fu grew more and more popular in Germany and they soon had several hundred students.
In the year 1984 Yeo Lian Hock was appointed to be the chief-instructor of the Nia Kwang Pugilistic Association. Three years later Yeo Lian Hock came to visit Germany the second time to take part in some demonstrations and to give lessons in traditional lion dance. On the instructions of Yeo Lian Hock the Shaolin Hung Choy Instructors Association was founded in 1988 to insure, that all instructors were highly qualified.
In the early 90's Yeo Lian Hock laid down his duties as the chief-instructor of the Nia Kwang Pugilistic Association because of disagreements in the way of teaching. But Frank Greinacher was supported furthermore. Yeo Lian Hock visited Germany in the same year to establish a lion dance group.

Raymond Wong

Raymond Wong
(1956 - )

Sifu Raymond Wong was born in Hong Kong on November 22, 1956. Shortly thereafter his parents immigrated to the United States and settled in Washington DC. Around the age of ten, Sifu Wong informally began to learn some basic Kung Fu from his father. Once he had had a taste of the martial arts, Sifu Wong became obsessed with learning more. At this time he met with Si Jo Dean Chin who had just opened the very first Jow Ga School in the United States in Washington's Chinatown. Sifu Wong threw himself into the study of Jow Ga with all his energy (often against his parent's wishes) and was soon considered one of Si Jo Chin's prominent students.
Sifu Wong competed for a number of years on the open tournament circuit and won many of the competitions he entered. His powerful and precise forms and weapons techniques and his fierce sparring made him one of the most respected competitors of his generation. He passed much of his knowledge on to other students when he swore his loyalty to Si Jo Chin and was made an instructor of the Jow Ga Kung Fu Association. Many of the students he trained have become nationally and internationally known competitors and some have gone on to open their own schools.
During his time studying with Si Jo Chin, Sifu Wong also became an experienced Lion Dance performer. Due to his skill in this art, he has been regularly contracted to perform at several government institutions (including the White House), major corporations, and civic groups. He has continued this tradition of excellence in his own Wong Chinese Boxing Association which is recognized as the premiere Lion Dance organization in Washington DC.
Unfortunately Si Jo Dean Chin died on August 9,1985. The school Si Jo Chin had worked so hard and long to establish now found itself in danger of being torn apart by individuals who saw this as an opportunity to further their own ambitions at the expense of his efforts and reputation. In the midst of this upheaval, Sifu Wong decided that the best way to preserve Si Jo's teachings was to open his own school. He did so in 1987 with the help of other students who had remained loyal to Dean Chin, by establishing the Wong Chinese Boxing Association.
Over the years he has trained hundreds of people in the art of Jow Ga. The Wong Chinese Boxing Association regularly participates in and wins many tournaments and its students are recognized by many as possessing outstanding Kung Fu skills. His Lion Dance team has performed for the FBI, CIA, most of the Federal agencies in the Washington metropolitan area, DC government, major sports arenas, and many private businesses, civic groups, and churches. Traditionally, however, the main focus of the Lion Dance is not entertainment. It is intended to chase away evil spirits and to bring good fortune to those for whom it is performed. Therefore, Sifu Wong's Lions are on call twenty-four hours a day throughout the year for anyone who wishes to ward off bad luck. One of Sifu Wong's most important achievements is the Jow Ga Kung Fu Temple Program. Through this program he takes in a number of people each year who through eviction, loss of employment, poverty, or other misfortunes are at risk of dropping out of school or turning to crime and teaches them Kung Fu. He also provides those who need it with a roof, food and clothing. In addition, they are able to learn skills such as apartment management, sales and service, locksmithing, construction, and tutoring. Several people who have come into Sifu's school in this way have not only become outstanding martial artists, but have also turned their lives in a positive direction.
