Abstract art is usually non-representational, so forms give way to emotion and expression. Human figures can be cubist, surreal etc. as above, but not usually considered abstract.
Execution is key to the idea, so i'm with the Pope on this one.
But then again he gets to look at the Sistine Chapel and the like all the time, a little spoiled really.

Along those lines, a friend who makes surfboards for a living (now THAT'S ART! lol) has this image in his workspace...

...so whenever he gets frustrated, he looks up and tells himself,
"OK Look at that.. That's marble, MARBLE! Now pick up your power tools and plastics and foams and get back to work."

But bottom line, i can't see that sculpture being even in the same realm as the abstract stuff out there...

When I saw that sculpture in person, it was unfortunately suffering from a bit of a hack n slash and Mary was missing some fingers. There are some artworks I've wanted to knife myself ( some of them were my pics. lol ), but this sculpture is amazing.

IMO the Artfart is the only way to go.

Is art the idea, or it's execution?

Well, ideally, it's both. Good execution will get your idea to come across in a better light. A good idea will make a good execution into something great. But, I don't think something has to have both to be considered art. Though to be considered great art, probably needs both. However, good execution with no idea, is often very sterile. Like some architecture I consider true art, and some I don't. But in that case I would not impose my judgement on other people, it's a purely IMO thing.

Though not truly abstract imo, i really like the work of Ashley_Bickerton.

The mixed media and self portrait elements really appeal to me. The pieces are really big too, frames all handmade by the artist.
This one is:

"The Preparation with Green Sky"
2007
Oil and digital print on canvas in carved wood, coconut, mother of pearl and coin inlaid artist frame
72 x 86 x 2 inches
