Abstract art is usually non-representational, so forms give way to emotion and expression. Human figures can be cubist, surreal etc. as above, but not usually considered abstract.
Execution is key to the idea, so i'm with the Pope on this one.
But then again he gets to look at the Sistine Chapel and the like all the time, a little spoiled really.
Along those lines, a friend who makes surfboards for a living (now THAT'S ART! lol) has this image in his workspace...
...so whenever he gets frustrated, he looks up and tells himself,
"OK Look at that.. That's marble, MARBLE! Now pick up your power tools and plastics and foams and get back to work."
But bottom line, i can't see that sculpture being even in the same realm as the abstract stuff out there...
