Rep Power: 23 | | I'm like this:
PC Games: You know it. I'm all about downloading those. I suck, I know
MP3's: same with these. I'm cheap
PS2, GCN, Xbox: 'Fraid I can't download these as none of my systems are modded. SO I don't download them.
Movies: I prefer to have the legit DVD case and all that jazz. So I don't download these.
That being said, downloading these things is wrong. It's illegal, and it shouldn't be done. But I can't afford all of these games I play and music I listen to. Not that it makes it ok, just my reasoning behind it.

Rep Power: 25 | | I think musicians, professional boxers, baseball players, football players, etc etc make way too much money as it is. I'm all for pirating music... all 30 gigs of it

Amen MonkeyFist. I heard there was a football player that is getting $99 million for a 7 (or was it 9) year contract. That is absurd. $99 million for someone who throws a football I think we should take that money and put it into medicine or cancer research or something. But that's just me (and that's also the US, so what does a Canuck like me know)

Rep Power: 63 | | | Well...it may be illegal. But how many times have we been ripped off.
Ie: How many times have you paid for a cd only to find out that 2 of the 17 songs were good...the rest sucked. Most of the time that seems to be the case. But also...how many times have you downloaded music and then really liked it so went out and bought it...quite a few myself.
Also notice how the recording industry doesnt like selling songs on a pay per song basis
Because they cant make the money off of the other crappy songs on a cd.
Or with software....I like using programs like...Word, Powerpt...and the like...but they try to charge almost $500 dollars (US) for these....when equally good programs are not even 1/10 of that.
Illegal...yes....immoral...not to sure myself.

I DL music all the time. Hey, I can tape things off the radio right And if a lot of the songs are good I will go out and get the CD because quality is better.
With movies, nothing beats the theatre. But at $6+ to see a flick, if I want to see it a second time before the DVD then DL here I come!
I've never DLed software before. A PowerPoint would be nice, but I can always use the University's for now.
Anywho, what to you mean that MA's are now on the chopping block Any sort of media can be ripped, its just that simple.

Rep Power: 69 | | | Well, if these guys would sell these CD's for what they were worth, sure. If the artists were getting a large cut of that cash, sure.

Rep Power: 63 | | | For those who dont know....with .torrents you download a program such as "bittorrent" or "shadow"....then you find .torrent files. These files basically have all the download info so when you run them they connect the torrent program to the servers (people online sharing) directly. There's a catch..your download speed is based on upload speed. So you have to upload also. That way there is more bandwidth available for others to download or to increase speeds.
But the quality of files are higher with .torrents I think....overall. I would only use .torrents for movies or anime.
With anime...it's only illegal if the anime has been licensed in your region. And when it is usually people take them down.
It can take several hours...even at cable/dsl speeds to get a movie from a .torrent. Same for music. So I use other programs for music/programs.

Rep Power: 25 | | | I think people try to justify downloading music by saying that they get ripped off. So Prescription drugs rip you off as well, but you don't go steal those. It's such a temptation though, because it's so convenient and everything, but it's most definitely wrong. You shouldn't steal, especially just not like MP3s. See, if it was a loaf of bread for your starving family, it would be understandable...

You are right Anne.
We are weak though.
I do think it's stealing...dont get me wrong. (except the anime...as I previously explained it's not illegal unless licensed in your region)
I just think what we said about it does give one something to think about...especially the next time they buy a 19 dollar cd with only 1 good song on it.
Or how the RIAA never had a problem with people copying music on tapes until the internet and how it became uncontrollable. There are even artists out there, like the DMB, who agree and have done free internet concerts and such.
So legally...it is stealing. But I think the "system" promotes it....ie money hungry, fame hungry people who overcharged for products....and now it's coming back to bite them in the butt.
I also think/know there isnt much they can do to stop it....they say they'll sue people and they have....but that doesnt stop it. Kazaa, since the lawsuits began, has had an increase in users...despite the RIAA (recording industry) claiming it has decreased.
And peer to peer programs...like bittorrent or limewire are perfectly legal. And the gov't cant justify making sharing files illegal...the gov't even shares files...ie downloadable material from gov't sites.
So it's quite the topic of debate.
But.....despite all that...yes it's stealing until the gov't says it's legal.
