Rep Power: 14 | | | Question on healing I don't heal like I used to. I'm not sure if it is because I'm getting older, or because I teach more and train less, but the fact remains, I don't heal like I used to.
Problem: My elbow has been hurting for a few months now. My training partner says that I probably have tendenitis from the second last move in my new form: a jump 180 in the air (no kick) with a knife hand and punch (both moves in the air). To get around fast, he says i'm over-extending my knife hand, which I don't doubt, I always extend as fast as possible. Normally my body would just heal itself over a couple of weeks, i'm no stranger to injury. In the past, always something hurt, if something wasn't hurting at any given time, I knew I wasn't training hard enough. But this isn't healing and my left arm techniques don't have the snap they did just a few months before.
Question 1: What are some medical (scientific) ways of healing this
Question 2: Are there are internal healing methods for this (I'm not a big believer on internal healing, I've always believed the body does what the mind wants it to do, and it does more than most people it can, and this is the origin of many 'internal healing' techniques, but hey, I'm always ready to learn).
Question 3: I'm only 23. My body should not be any less capable of healing than when i was 19 because of age right It is because I train less and teach more right
Question 4: any other thoughts

Its a matter of fact that repetitive injuries tend to take more time to heal.
If you're looking for a quick fix, im afraid that there isnt one.
Best you'll find is people suggesting ice/heat, gentle movement, perhaps gentle massage, rest, maybe some wrapping..and thats about it...oh and one more thing....TIME!
If you find that it is the over extension of this knife hand that is causing all the problems, then i'd suggest you'd either a learn to compensate through other means, or accept that you'll not be able to do that particular move that well.. |

Rep Power: 14 | | | oh yes, very good point on the keep repeating the injury part. I guess I should have added that after it started hurting on the second week, when I figured out it was the knife hand, I corrected the problem and stopped hyper-extending it, I stopped doing that move in the form altogether for about a month. Sorry, I forgot to add that

There are two types of people - smart ones and wise ones.
Smart ones learn from their mistakes.
Wise ones learn from others'.
I'm the smart guy. Not a smartass.
Her's the problem of most people:
"In the past, always something hurt, if something wasn't hurting at any given time, I knew I wasn't training hard enough."
YOu guys gotta stop that bull.
Sore is ok - hurt is not - to cont. is stupid. - ok scratch that - PC term - not wise.
Elbow - hyper extend - chop chop - trauma to tendons. Going 100 mph one direction and then pull back real fast.
There's shou fa - hand method.
Then there's shen fa - body method.
Speed comes froma combination of both.
Do some of what LXL suggested. If it's gone on for a while. Touch it - is it cool or cold to touch (blood/chi not going there). Does it feel better with heat Does it feel better after a hot bath Does it hurt massaging it. Those you have to know. At what point does it start hurting - slow or fast movement - twisting when extended etc.
See an osteopath - this requitres touch and proper diagnosis.
but regarding not healing as fast - sorry - birth, get old, sickness then death - that's the natural progression. We are like cars ina way - need maintenance and fixup sometimes but unlike a car - we cannot trade it in - so take care of it.
Whne you're 40, 50 year old - chicks don't come over and say, "Boy you so sexy, you do that chop so well, sleep with me" You might be nuesing that dam elbow everytime it's about to rain...
Diet, activities and maintenance and what you do after an injury will determine how fast you recover.
Herbs, chi gung and tuina (massage) will help. Self massage after soaking in hot water cooked with sake/rice wine and vinegar will help. You'll need some herbs but I don't have any to share right now - sorry.
Alternative - heat hand up with soaking in the hotest water possible - soften it up - open the pores - relaxes the sinews, move blood and chi - then get some "red flower oil" from Asian market and rub it on. Do that every night before bed for a few weeks.
Let hand dry completely first - unless you want to feel it "burn"

Rep Power: 78 | | | I had my wife seel her bike to her brother till our kids are grown up - nothing worse than raising kids on a wheelchair . Nether is riding around on a wheelchair chasing the misses around the bedroom sexy. So we'll wait till I have 35 years or more in MA exp. or over 50-60. Then I can take her on those wild wild rides.
I actually prefer Harleys to the rotch rockets now I'm "older" - hehe

I never went out of my way to hurt myself. By sparring 3 times a week and training hard for competition, there was just always something the matter. bruises on the shins, a jammed finger, a cut eyebrow, these were never things I tryed to get, but inevitable came. I kick very often and when people get a VERY solid block in on my shins, they get a little hurt, like a downward elbow block. When holding a board, if the man misses and slams your finger, there is a chance it is going to jam, so when you hold hundreds of boards a month, its bound to happen. Due to the amount of time I was spending doing hard training, something was always the matter, and when something wasn't the matter, it meant it was time to evaluate if I was still spending as much time as I was the month before.
As far as the chop chop so well, sleep with me.... it works now, its not going to work in the future hehehe
And finaly, thank you for the useful information. I will try some of that. (and its not bad, it only hurts when I train, I can even put pressure on it and barely feel its presence, it just bothers me because it isn't as fast or strong as it used to be)

no, actually it scares the tar out of me... I've always thought that I've drawn my authority from being so skilled, so able to demonstrate my knowledge; I have no doubt the knowledge will retain, but will I be as effective of a teacher if my students no longer see the knowledge proformed as well as it used to Also, I've always felt able to handle ever physical situation if I had to. The other day there was nearly a fight, and I found myself doubting for the first time in years that I would be able to handle the situation,... all of a sudden, size sudddenly matters. Its just scary because I REALLY don't want these things to happen.
