Dragonslist Techniques: Triangle Choke Defense

after the clip of Bas Rutten doing some defense against the triangle choke, Cam made a clip with not just 1, but 3 ways to get out of that nasty choke

only on the Dragonslist!!!

see the clip here

and read this:

1.) Always remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Avoiding and defending the triangle is better than having to escape one that has been applied fully.

2.) There are different degrees of application. A triangle (or any submission) is never simply on or off. The guy applying it will slowly work his way into it, step by step, and counter steps can be taken to avoid getting in any deeper at each step.

3.) As soon as the guy on bottom passes one of the arms he should automatically lock his ankles together in a scissor fashion behind your back/neck and try to keep control of your head, holding you down and not allowing you to make posture.

4.) The defense to this is to widen your base (knees) and sit up straight, back straight up, head high, looking to the ceiling. Do not stand up or try to pull out backwards.

5.) At this point, if there is enough space, do like Inferus said and drive the other arm back into the triangle. If there isn't enough space, take both hands and reach up and grab the knee that is over your shoulder, press the knee down toward the ground and posture up really hard. This will break his ankles open and allow the space to get the hand back through.

6.) Now let's assume he has the arm passed, is controlling your head not allowing you to make posture and has his ankles crossed behind your back (not yet closed in the figure 4 that makes the triangle). Let's assume your head and left arm are in the triangle. You will place your left elbow on the ground by his hip and force his right thigh to remain well behind your shoulder. The trick is to brace out and keep the meaty part of your left shoulder away from your neck (because that's what will be choking you).
He will ultimately want to get your left arm across your centerline, across your body. This will make the choke tight. Too many people on bottom start grabbing the arm and trying to pull it across the centerline. If he does this, he will probably no longer be focussing on holding your head down so simply sit up and make posture. Keep your left elbow pinned to his hip and do not let him straighten it out for an armbar. Do not let him underhook your right leg.

7.) If he has this position (your head down) and is working the arm across the body and is also in the process of tightening up his figure 4, you will do the "runner's block" break. Your left arm will be across centerline, parallell to your waist. Your left elbow will still be on his right hip and your left hand will be close to his left hip. You will reach around his left thigh with your right arm and clasp your hands together. Basically, you have encircled his left thigh with your arms and are holding it (and his hips) tightly to your chest. You will "hop up" onto both feet, staying crouched. Your left foot will be directly underneath his lower back. Your right foot will be directly behind it, about 24 inches back (picture the foot position of a sprinter in a starting block position about to run a race). Bring your left knee to your own chest (you should feel it slide into his tailbone) and sit back down, keeping your feet in this same position (your left foot will be planted on the ground with the knee up in his tailbone, your right knee will drop to the ground about 18 inches to the right of your left foot, and your right foot will be under your butt directly in the middel of your left foot and right knee, forming a triangle base using those three points of contact. You will be planted on the ball of your right foot, sitting on the back of the heel, your right heel almost in your own tailbone, still hugging his left thigh to your chest.
Here is where too many people screw up this move... they try to push on the tailbone with their knee and pull their head out. While this "can" work, it's not the best idea. What you want to do is actually drive the knee and your head back into the triangle, pressing his hips down (still hugging the thigh) and posturing with your shoulders. This should break his ankle scissor/figure 4. You can also use both hands to grab the knee and force it down toward the ground but be careful of the armbar.

8.) Assuming same position (your head and left arm in the triangle) and he has your arm across and his figure 4 locked... You are in trouble now...Stand up and post your left hand on the ground (palm flat) by his left ear (keep your head tucked, your chin to your chest to avoid the armbar). With your right hand grab his left hip and walk toward his head to your left, cranking his head and neck towards his right hip. This will cause him to open up his figure 4. You can step over his head from here and break the hold totally. If you are good you can fall into a kneebar from here.

9.) If he has the hold locked up and has your right leg underhooked (actually tightening the triangle and keeping you from walking to the left to crank him) then quickly stand up and step over his head with your right leg and scissor around his body. Push away and it should break his figure 4. You will be in danger of being footlocked here so watch for it but at least you are out of the choke.

10.) If all else fails, stand up and slam the guy on his head. Most of the time the guy will simply use the opportunity to tighten up the triangle and finish you but I have seen rare occasions where the guy on bottom got KOed...LOL!!!!! If the guy on bottom is good he will automatically underhook your leg not allowing you to stand up or lift him off the ground.

have fun training

If possible, we should create a repository for such stuff, that has them permanent.

The video is good, especially when hearing of other people doing some "X-treme-terror-fighting" videos claiming that such a quality is so ultra expensive, that you should be glad to see just a good picture quality - with crap stuff.

My take is that such stuff needs to be trained regularly, seeing is not enough. Don't know if it's an idea to pick up a mat and a friend to train at least a few times a weak, or not, if no regular good class is available. I was impressed by this first fight of a user on another forum acting very cool as if nothing happens, getting a submission, not hurrying at all:

Nice work to all involved. A very clean video, well executed, and full of useful material.

I'm very impressed with it.

I agree we should have a repository of these things.

The link at "see the clip here" works. Try to right-click the link and select the appropriate menu entry of your language for "save target as". If it then downloads properly, but the file clicked on your computer in Windows Explorer does not play, it's a problem of your installation of Windows Media Player. You need that player to view the file at all, so if you don't have it, download it from Microsoft.com - don't know if you get a version of it also for Linux or Mac from there.

Cam's explanations are thorough and logical, as usual, and he gets across a lot of information in a short time. There are a number of details in that video you can pick up from close observation as well. Had he explained them in the same way he does during training, it would have turned into a 30 minute video, lol.

Thanks for hosting the vid, Chief
