Rep Power: 108 | | | Lutter shot his wad and I thought he had it. Also, lol @ UFC for having the Fight of the Night as one of the fights that was not broadcast. Funny how those things work out.

Rep Power: 164 | | That was a textbook perfect escape for Franklin...
Funny how they have a guy that did not submit as the submission of the night... Maybe fight ending of the night but it's not a submission without a submission.... | “ | Also, lol @ UFC for having the Fight of the Night as one of the fights that was not broadcast. | ” | |
I thought they had Goulet vs. Hironaka as fight of the night....

Rep Power: 108 | | | Aw man...this is what I get for watching it out instead of at home. The TV was turned off after the main event...I was told that there was no more (although depending on time they DO show a couple fights after the main event). Blast. =(

I read a thread on sherdog where they said it was a simple, white belt escape
weird that we don't see it being pulled off more often in fights then...
it was a weird, but good, night

Rep Power: 164 | | | Actually, Lance has mastered that escape. Since I taught it to him the only person that has been able to armbar him is me, and he gets out of my armbar attempts 90% of the time with it. We have a habit of naming moves at Team Praxis after guys at our gym... Maybe we'll start calling that escape the "Lance"...
I wouldn't say it's a whitebelt move but it's very common. I think the reason that you don't see it pulled off very often is a couple of reasons...
1.) The move is hard to understand all of the details and many people tend to want to move their body incorrectly when doing it, often times cranking their own arm. If people learning it practice it a few times incorrectly and crank their own arms they may simply neglect it as a move that will not work for them...
2.) Getting good at this move requires a LOT of practical application and real time training. Often in rolling/sparring people will tend to avoid armbars instead of getting put in them so they don't have many opportunities to practice it. Others will never put themselves in an armbar to practice it out of ego because they don't want to risk getting caught. To get good at it you have to either get caught in a lot of armbars or let your training partners catch you in armbars so you have the opportunity to train it over and over applicably.
3.) Lastly, many times in an NHB fight people crank subs fast because the split second between a catch and a tap means an opportunity to escape. A lot of people automatically assume "I'm caught" and tap immediately to avoid damage and because it's the way they train.
There are different mentalities on training subs and defenses in different camps. A lot of camps teach the students to tap the minute they are caught. Others (like we do) teach the importance of immobilization of a submission hold/position and focus on the actual catch instead of the emphasis on the actual implementation of the break/hyper-extension. This way the "catcher" can improve his positioning abilities and his control of the immobilization and the "catchee" has plenty of time to train his escapes because he can feel confident that his training partner isn't going to immediately yank the sub. For example, when I am rolling with students I will put them in the armbar and simply hold them in position without ever extending the arm just so they can get a feel for how to effect their escapes. It's more important to be able to secure and hold that immobilization position because if you are good at that you can take your time on the actual implementation of the hyper-extension.
When this kind of training takes place and the "catchee" gets to practice his escapes over and over in real time they develop the confidence in doing the escapes and also the timing, so they are already executing the escape the minute they realize they are caught. I think that was the case with Rich. Also, knowing he was fighting Lutter, a very skilled submission artist, I'm sure he spent a lot of time training escapes for this fight.

I think reason nr 3 is a very common indeed
it's all about how you train
we did a series of these kinda escapes and follow ups
we would go to an Omo Plata after that escape and to me it seems Lutter wanted to do that as well, but was just a little too late to be able to pull it off

Rep Power: 164 | | | Omoplata is a valid counter but I prefer the hammerlock counter (kimura) because it allows a little more control of the arm...
